In loving memory of Barry Lewis Smith who sadly passed away on 21st April 2022.

Barry “Lewis” Smith was born in Nottingham on 26th August 1937 to Horoce and Elizabeth Smith. He was a loving husband to his beloved wife Beryl Smith, for 64 years. Lewis is a father to Lee, Richard, Philip, a grandad to Jade, Joe, Alisha, Kieren, Harry, Alfie, Charlie, a great-grandad to Skyla and Edie and a father-in-law to Tracey and Raquel. He was a proud family man, bursting with pride and love for all his family members. Lewis was always there to help, support and encourage in anyway needed for each and everyone of us.

Lewis grew up in Aspley with his 3 beautiful sisters where he later met his wife at the age of 14 . They moved to Arnold in 1961 where they have lived ever since. In his younger years he enjoyed cycling to Derbyshire, motorcycling and going to the cinema (on the back row). Lewis had a passion for gardening, putting every ounce of love and care into his magnificent garden. He loved dancing with his wife, to his favourite genre; rock and roll and loved giving the advice “up there for thinking, down there for dancing”.

Lewis spent the majority of his life as a proud miner. He went from coal faced work to a training officer where he supported and nurtured new trainees. Whilst at the Hucknall colliery, Lewis was extremely proud of being the head of the team, who won the national safety quiz championship. Amongst other proud achievements, Lewis spent 10 years as a JP at the Nottingham magistrates court.

For all who have known Lewis, will have memories that will live on forever and for that, we will always be grateful. He was a one of a kind and an absolute character. Lewis was stubborn and unfiltered, always speaking his mind but with everyone’s best interests at heart. In the words of Lewis himself “you can’t beat the old man”.

Funeral details: as a family, we ask that you donate to the Macmillan Nurses charity instead of gifting flowers. You can either donate above or at the funeral but this will be cash only. Thank you in advance and we appreciate any donation given.
