In loving memory of Edward John "Ted" Coughlin who sadly passed away on 11th April 2022.
Ted was born on 28th September 1927 in Forge Cottage at the Remount Depot, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, where his adored father Patrick James Coughlin had taken up the post of blacksmith after more than 20 years' service in the Royal Artillery.
Ted started work as a trainee engineer in Nottingham at the age of 14. After his National Service in the Army, he decided to change direction and took a job down the coal mine at Bestwood.
He married Joan Harrold in 1958 and a year later their only child, Karen, was born. For the first three years of Karen's life, they lived with Joan's parents at Crown Street in Nottingham, before moving to Bestwood village.
When that pit closed in 1968, he transferred to Blidworth Colliery and the family moved to Rainworth.
Ted remained at Blidworth for the rest of his working life until taking early retirement just prior to that pit closing in the late 1980s.
He had a long, healthy and happy retirement. His family grew with the arrival of son-in-law George, then beloved grandson Matthew. In recent years he was proud to become a great-grandfather when Matthew and Sarah's son Henry was born. Tragically, George died in 2011.
Sadly, Ted lost his beloved wife of 62 years Joan in January 2020, followed later that year by 'the best pal a man ever had', his friend of more than 70 years Ron Langley.
Ted is survived by daughter Karen, grandson Matthew and wife Sarah, great-grandson Henry, along with seven nephews and nieces in England and the USA.

Dapper Dad. It had to be a suit, tie, pocket hanky, even when you're on the pier at Clacton with your infant daughter. My Dad was known for looking smart, no matter what the occasion.

In thoughtful mood. He's probably thinking 'why aren't I in a suit?' It took us about 60 years to get him in a woolly, but this was one of his favourites.

Dear Uncle Ted. You were a special person and a true gentleman. I don’t think there could have been a better friendship than yours with Dad - not many people get that.
I know you and dad will be up there now, best suits on ( always smartly dressed )standing by the bar putting the world to rights. You will never be forgotten ‘me Darlin’ x x
