Tom Lydon: 1933-2022
If there’s anything you can say about Tom Lydon, it’s that he lived a full life. A man with perpetually itchy feet, he loved to travel, party, and watch his beloved Charlton Athletic & Man Utd, but he was never happier than when he was surrounded by his huge family. To Tom, nothing mattered more.
Born in 1933 in Chester-Le-Street, County Durham, he moved to London aged three. That’s where he grew up and eventually met Kitty, the love of his life. They were married for 68 years, had 8 children, 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren – but London was just the start of their adventures. As well as the capital, they lived in Canada, Reading, Yorkshire, Lancashire and finally Leigh-On-sea, where they found home on the Essex coast.
His children will always remember Tom for his terrible cooking, his sprawling Dad jokes, winning four grand on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, and his renditions of Maggie and Danny Boy. His grandchildren will remember him for playing cricket in the back garden, ridiculously long walks, autumn afternoons spent blackberry picking, and singing The Village Pump. The world will remember Tom for his strong faith, his charity fundraising for Survive and MS, and for his belief that life was to be lived in every single moment. He practised what he preached.
But most of all, he’ll be remembered with a smile, and with huge love.
Sleep well, Dad.
