John was born on January 25th 1943 in Plumstead, London.
As a young teenager John had a job delivering orders for the local Co-op ….on a bicycle with a basket on the front where he earned more in tips from customers than his meagre wages.
1959-64. He served 5 year Apprenticeship with CEGB (Central Electricity Generating Board) working in various Power Stations - Woolwich, Belvedere, Deptford - he enjoyed the camaraderie of the other young Apprentices.
John then worked for various Heating & Air Conditioning firms, travelling around the UK, where on one job in Lincoln Prison he had to be locked in for the duration of the job.
He married Bet where they had a daughter Sue who was born in 1969. He married Carol and had his second daughter Dawn was born in 1974.
From 1976 he worked as Commissioning Engineer for London Borough of Bromley on the new Library/Churchill Theatre complex where he stayed as Building Services Engineer till his Retirement in 2003. He ‘rubbed shoulders’ with all the Stars but specially enjoyed the various Concerts on a Sunday - favourites were the Trad Jazz musicians, Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball, Chris Barber, Ken Collier - he didn’t mind working Night Shifts then and this love of Jazz stayed with him.
In 1977 working in the Library he met Brenda who he married in December 1980 and they shared 42 happy years together.
With both Sue and Dawn living in Australia and six lovely grandchildren ‘Down Under’ - Danielle, Sean, Chandra, Kaeli, Eden & Orla, of whom he was a very proud Grandad. John and Brenda visited Australia, both being memorable trips in1998 & 2009 where he never stopped talking about the kids and Australia.
In November 2019 he was diagnosed with Mesothelioma which he contracted due to his early career in the Power Stations and underwent Chemotherapy in Darent Valley Hospital.
He loved making models, steam engines, model railways, tinkering with his Classic British motorbikes, walks with dog Taz in the local parks, woods & riverside.
Life came to an abrupt end on 24 February 2022 in Darent Valley Hospital after a series of heart attack, chest infection & stroke.
In loving memory of John William Fleming who sadly passed away on 24th February 2022
