Divisional Sergeant Major Michael Dabbs MBE RVM. 1949 - 2022
In loving memory of Michael Dabbs. Our amazing, strong and irreplaceable Dad, Grandad and Partner of Ann, passed away peacefully with us all by his side on 20th February 2022 at 0600.
Dad was such a larger than life character who was loved by everyone he met. He was so charismatic, an extremely talented musician, very generous and kind; the life and soul of the party. There is now a huge gap in our lives and in all of our hearts.
We are so proud of Dad’s many accomplishments, starting out with the Grimethorpe Colliery Junior Band in his early teens, prior to working at the pit. In 1968, “he left Grimethorpe with a trombone and a big heart.”
His early service saw brief spells with the Royal Marines and The Parachute Regiment.
He went on to the Band of the Grenadier Guards which he had the honour of serving for the next 25 years. This gave him the opportunity to travel the world and saw him rise through the ranks, becoming the senior Band Sergeant Major of the Household Division.
One of Dad’s greatest achievements, of which we are tremendously proud, was the award of the MBE by Her Majesty The Queen in 1989.
Following retirement from the Grenadier Guards, he continued his service as a Yeoman of the Guard, becoming the Divisional Sergeant Major. Being awarded the RVM in 2019 by Prince William, once again, we were fortunate to attend another proud moment at Buckingham Palace, on the completion of 48 years total service.
We are asking that only family and close friends attend Dad's funeral as there are limited numbers in the church and limited parking spaces. Please confirm if you are planning to attend.
Additionally, there will be a Memorial Service at the Guards Chapel, Wellington Barracks in June, where everyone will be welcome to attend to pay their respects. Additional details will follow in due course.
We would kindly request a donation to Princess Alice Hospice rather than flowers.
