Margaret was born and bred in Gillingham, which remained her home for over 90 years. She attended Barnsole Road School followed by Chatham Grammar before joining Lloyds Bank. Her family were members of St Paul’s Methodist Church and she remained closely involved with the church and a committed Christian throughout her life.
In 1949, aged just 18, she established a Brownie pack at St Paul’s. That was a start of another life-long association. She became Girl Guides’ Gillingham District Commissioner and then County Commissioner for West Kent. After retiring from that role she remained involved; she was an active member of the Trefoil Guild and served as its West Kent President. She had many happy memories of guiding, including times spent at Paxwood and Foxlease.
In her late teens, Margaret started going out with Roger whom she met through the church. They were married in 1952, and remained devoted to each other until Roger’s death in 1999. They had two children, Clive and Sally, and four grandchildren (Samuel, Victoria, Esther and Jonathan). Margaret was delighted in more recent years to have been presented with three great-grandchildren – William, Joseph and Thomas. Her house contained many photographs.
In spite of suffering from painful and debilitating conditions for many years, she remained positive and cheerful and was known for her sense of humour. While inevitably the years have seen the passing of many friends, many who will have very fond memories of Margaret still remain.
In her passing Margaret will have been much comforted by the thought of being reunited with Roger.
