It was on the 3rd June 1927 that Maureen June Theadom made her appearance, she started her journey in Tiptree and from the age of 5 she lived in Kelvedon with her family. She passed her eleven plus and attended Colchester County High School.
During the 2nd World War, she joined the red cross and one of the things she was asked to do, was assist in the birth of her twin brother and sister.
When the Americans came over, lorries used to park along the road, and in the evening on several occasions her father had to go out and look for his daughters, June & Joyce, but they didn’t lack for chocolate.
Her career started as a secretary at Witham and Colchester and her secretarial career continued up until she was sixty-six when she decided to retire. She also joined the Conservative party, the Red Cross as mentioned above and the local amateur dramatic society.
She married Colin Downie at 22 and moved to West Hampstead, where she started her family. The first child was Sue, followed a few years later by Nigel. In 1961 she moved to Beckenham, Kent where she joined St George’s Church. After a short period, her 3rd child Jackie arrived making her family complete.
She loved travelling and went to many countries with family and friends but regretted that she never got to go to China. She was always, a very independent person, and when she smiled the lights went on.
Then her grandchild Laura arrived and what a joy that was for her, but sadly soon after she lost her youngest child Jackie at the tender age of twenty-five.
After her husband Colin died. She moved to Wigmore, to be nearer her family. She loved reading many different types of books and played bowls in several clubs playing until her nineties. Gardening also was a passion as was socialising with friends, always making the most of life, when and where she could.
Her favourite personality was Winston Churchill, who she met and had a handshake and a chat with, in Chartwells gardens, and wished for another 1/2 inch in height!
She really did live a full life, but most of all she loved and cherished her family and so many people will sadly miss her.
