Irene grew up in Canterbury went to Simon Langton Girls Grammar School was a keen Girl Guide went through World War 2 and experienced the Blitz on Canterbury. I believe she started work for the Magistrates Court in Folkestone and it was whilst working for the courts that she met her first husband Harold. They moved to Thundersley in Essex where she began her career in the housing department for the local council finally working for Lewisham Council as a Housing Welfare Officer. Harold sadly passed away in 1976 taken suddenly by a heart attack and it was through her love of music both classical and jazz that she met and married Bruce in 1980. After retiring they moved from the hustle and bustle of Beckenham to Redgrave having stayed at a friend’s holiday cottage and falling in love with the village with the superb bird watching the area provided. Her lifelong passions in addition to music were Sudoku, Scrabble, Crosswords, The Soroptimist Society, The English Speakers Union and the WI.

Irene was Peter's and my good friend and became part of our family. She was also a sister Soroptimist. I am blessed that I spoke to her two days before she died. We will miss her.
