In loving memory of June Self who sadly passed away on 18th January 2022, with her husband, son and daughter by her side.
June was born in Bath in 1941, and raised in Essex, where she lived for the majority of the first part of her life, before spending significant parts of her later life living in Shropshire and Hampshire.
In June’s early career she worked on the legal team for a high court case for the author Leon Uris that helped bring justice for survivors of Auschwitz. June wrote about this in her own book, “The Fourth Angel”, and she is referenced as “Sheila Lamb” in Leon Uris’ book “QBV11” which is also loosely based on the same court case.
Later, June met the love of her life, her husband Mike, while they both were working on the fruit and vegetables exchange in London. Mum held the auspicious title of Head of Apples! June and Mike have had a great many adventures , over their 46 years together; they loved to travel and couldn't resist a "doer upper" of a house! They had two children, Robert and Elizabeth, and three granddaughters, Imogen, Phoebe, and Eve. June was the most wonderful, caring wife, mother and Nana.
June was a fun loving, social, formidable and feisty person. She always "said it like it is" and everyone appreciated this quality. People gravitated towards her in a room, she shined so bright and laughed so loud. She also had the loudest sneezes ever!
Mum loved to sing and was part of many choirs, in church and when she and Dad travelled on a cruise.
She also loved to paint and draw, a trait that has been passed on to her 3 granddaughters.
June also loved animals, riding horses throughout her life and caring for lots of rescue dogs.
There wasn't much that Mum didn't love in life or want to try and this was shown by her passion for sport, and dangerous sports at that! She often went skiing in her younger days, played squash at her local club in Essex and adored tennis. For 2 weeks when Wimbledon was on we were not allowed to disturb her! She also would "encourage" Dad and us to turn our hand to a new sport, this included Dad wind surfing in Mexico!!
June liked all the good things in life: sunshine, music, art, nature, good wine, ice cream and chocolate but most of all laughter! June travelled to many parts of the world and enjoyed wherever she went. June was a very social person and loved meeting people, particularly if it gave her the chance to use her language skills.
She will be missed terribly, but we realize how lucky we were to have had her in our lives. We love you June, Mum and Nana. Xx
