In loving memory of Allan John Stead who sadly passed away on 10th January 2022, aged 97.
Allan was born in Northallerton (North Yorkshire) and was the youngest of 3 brothers. His mother lived to a grand age too, was very musical and had a strong Christian faith. His brothers Hugh and Peter saw action in the Navy and Air Force during WW2, but Allan did his military service in the Army after WW2 had finished.
He married Ann Wilson in 1953 after they met at a car rally, they had over 60 years of happy marriage, and he was devastated when she passed away some years ago. The majority of his working life was at William Halsteads textile mill, where he was production director and would 'pour oil on troubled waters', showing that he was always the gentleman and a gentle man. They adopted 2 children naming them Simon and Sara, loving them, giving them all their material needs and guiding them to be successful. His love of history showed as he took the family to castles and museums during frequent caravan holidays. He had a love of literature and wrote poetry for special occasions. He was always generous to family and friends.
After Ann died, he left the home in Brighouse (West Yorkshire) he had lived in for 60 years to move to Nottingham to be near Simon, in a bungalow among a lovely sheltered retirement community called Bridge Green. And finally his last 18 months was cared for by the staff of Wollaton Park Care home, as his immobility and frailty increased. Whoever he met he was very well liked, appreciated, admired, respected and loved.

Allan's service will be streamed live, should you wish to join us from home. Please copy and paste the following link into your web browser and use the login details provided:

I have known Simon and Alena since they were engaged and have enjoyed many happy times in their home over the years. Through them I got to know Allan and Ann over family meals when they visited Nottingham and was struck by the interest and concern they had for each member of the family. Allan was a kind and generous man who enjoyed conversing with others and I feel privileged to have known him.

I have also lost a father-in-law with Parkinson’s disease and I think this is an excellent choice of charity to support.

I have happy memories of meeting Allan at one or two of Kristina’s birthday celebrations when she was younger. I could see what a much loved Grandad he was, and that he was a real gentleman. I remember him as very warm and friendly. I love the beautiful photos that have been posted on this website which show what an intrepid explorer he was even well into his late eighties and how very important he was to the Stead family. I will be praying for you all on Friday that the funeral is a really good tribute to a much loved Dad and Grandad, and that you know God’s presence very close to you in the sadness. May you feel loved by your Cornerstone family who prayed for you together in the prayer meeting this morning.

I really miss granddad and I know that you miss him too. He was kind and amazing, granddad that anyone and everyone would want. A Granddad that was loving, generous, wise and just plain cool with his sunglasses! He was full of stories from long ago. I remember his amazing house in Yorkshire, lovely Christmases we have spend there, Christmas presents, toy train from a special toy box and lots of jigsaw puzzles Kristina and I used to complete together. Remembering with much LOVE, Daniel x

I first met Allan about 12 years ago. He struck me as a very thoughtful man, intellectually sharp and with very considered opinions. Numerous meals and glasses of wine are testimony to his inherent generosity. Thank you Allan.

We only met Allan and Ann 21 years ago when they warmly welcomed us into their home and dare I say family. They were incredibly generous and hospitable people and we were privileged to meet them. I am very glad that you, Simon, Alena, Kristina and Daniel had such wonderful parents and grandparents. Although we won't be with you in person on the day of Allen's funeral, you will be in our thoughts and hearts.
with love from Gustine and Dennis
