Alfred Whittaker (8 Jul 1938 - 23 Dec 2021)

I have many good and happy memories of working with (and for) Alf during the first half of my career with the BGS, in the Deep Geology Unit and its later reincarnations. He was always a source of sound advice, delivered with good humour, on the mysterious ways of BGS! I will remember him.

It was a privilege for John and I to attend Alf's funeral online today. As Sarah's sister-in-law, I was fortunate to know both Alf and Jane. They were lovely people. We learnt so much more about Alf today - a truly humble and remarkable man.

Alf was a lovely man. I had the privilege to work with him in the late 1990s just before his retirement and he even asked me to say a few words at his retirement do in the canteen, which was a great honour. I am very sad to hear of his passing, but his good name and reputation will live on with all those who knew him.

Alfred was a helpful and inspiring colleague, my thoughts are with his family at these difficult times.

Alfred was an immensely gifted man and will be missed by so many.
