In loving memory of Margaret Wright who sadly passed away on 3rd December 2021 aged 87. Much loved wife of the late Ian McKenzie Wright and mother of 3 children, Fiona, Alison and Stephen. She was a doting grandmother to Andrew, Emma, Ella, Samuel and Isabelle. Margaret also had 4 great grandchildren, Leo, Lola, Theo and Nola.
Margaret was born on the 13th January 1934 in the mining village or Bircotes in North Nottinghamshire. Margaret’s parents, Fred and Margaret Brindle were originally from Lancashire and moved to Bircotes when the coalmine opened.
Margaret was the youngest of 4 children, sisters Joyce, Alice (Sally) and Vera.
Margaret trained as a shorthand typist and worked as a secretary in the local factory, Glass Bulbs. It was there that she met her husband to be, Ian Wright. They were married on 2nd April 1955 and enjoyed a very happy marriage.
After a short time of living at her parents’ house they moved to their own house in nearby Bawtry, that was to be their long term home. Margaret and Ian enjoyed socialising with a close group of friends. Dinner dances were a regular occurrence.
Margaret and Ian were very family oriented and took the family on holiday every year, often to Scotland, visiting Ian’s mother and other relatives. Devon, Cornwall and Wales were also places they enjoyed in the early family days.
Margaret embraced her role as a housewife caring for her children and managing the home. She was an accomplished seamstress and made everything from party dresses, her children’s clothes, dolls outfits, curtains and bean bags to name a few. She was also very good at knitting and kept the whole family kitted out in beautiful garments right up until very recently. Margaret was a good cook, baking and making family meals daily and for family occasions – birthdays, Christmas and other family get togethers.
Around 1970 Margaret returned to work. This time she worked as a receptionist for a Doctors medical practice in nearby Tickhill. At first this was part time as her children came first but as they all moved on to secondary school she became full time. She enjoyed her work and was highly regarded. She worked there until she retired around 2000.
Margaret and Ian were very hands on grandparents, often having their grand children to stay for a week or so during the summer holidays creating many fond memories.
Once their own children had flown the nest, Margaret and Ian also enjoyed many holidays with Margaret’s sister Joyce and her husband Gordon. They loved to have walking holidays in the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District (often twice a year) but also Devon, Norfolk and even driving to the Dordogne in France.
In the 1990’s Margaret took evening classes to develop her computer skills and became quite competent with word processing, emails, shopping on line and using Skype.
Margaret and Ian both enjoyed reading and always had a book on the go. They also loved doing the newspaper crossword each day, it was one of their happy routines and they were good at it.
She will be deeply missed but leaves us with many happy memories and smiles.
