In loving memory of Margaret Wright who sadly passed away on 3rd December 2021 aged 87. Much loved wife of the late Ian McKenzie Wright and mother of 3 children, Fiona, Alison and Stephen. She was a doting grandmother to Andrew, Emma, Ella, Samuel and Isabelle. Margaret also had 4 great grandchildren, Leo, Lola, Theo and Nola.

Margaret was born on the 13th January 1934 in the mining village or Bircotes in North Nottinghamshire. Margaret’s parents, Fred and Margaret Brindle were originally from Lancashire and moved to Bircotes when the coalmine opened.

Margaret was the youngest of 4 children, sisters Joyce, Alice (Sally) and Vera.
Margaret trained as a shorthand typist and worked as a secretary in the local factory, Glass Bulbs. It was there that she met her husband to be, Ian Wright. They were married on 2nd April 1955 and enjoyed a very happy marriage.

After a short time of living at her parents’ house they moved to their own house in nearby Bawtry, that was to be their long term home. Margaret and Ian enjoyed socialising with a close group of friends. Dinner dances were a regular occurrence.

Margaret and Ian were very family oriented and took the family on holiday every year, often to Scotland, visiting Ian’s mother and other relatives. Devon, Cornwall and Wales were also places they enjoyed in the early family days.

Margaret embraced her role as a housewife caring for her children and managing the home. She was an accomplished seamstress and made everything from party dresses, her children’s clothes, dolls outfits, curtains and bean bags to name a few. She was also very good at knitting and kept the whole family kitted out in beautiful garments right up until very recently. Margaret was a good cook, baking and making family meals daily and for family occasions – birthdays, Christmas and other family get togethers.

Around 1970 Margaret returned to work. This time she worked as a receptionist for a Doctors medical practice in nearby Tickhill. At first this was part time as her children came first but as they all moved on to secondary school she became full time. She enjoyed her work and was highly regarded. She worked there until she retired around 2000.

Margaret and Ian were very hands on grandparents, often having their grand children to stay for a week or so during the summer holidays creating many fond memories.

Once their own children had flown the nest, Margaret and Ian also enjoyed many holidays with Margaret’s sister Joyce and her husband Gordon. They loved to have walking holidays in the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District (often twice a year) but also Devon, Norfolk and even driving to the Dordogne in France.

In the 1990’s Margaret took evening classes to develop her computer skills and became quite competent with word processing, emails, shopping on line and using Skype.

Margaret and Ian both enjoyed reading and always had a book on the go. They also loved doing the newspaper crossword each day, it was one of their happy routines and they were good at it.

She will be deeply missed but leaves us with many happy memories and smiles.

I have fond memories of Margaret, whilst living a couple of doors away down the road, as a child. Latterly, when visiting my Aunt who had lived opposite her, I always enjoyed popping over for a chat. She always asked about my family and was, quite rightly, very proud of her own. A lovely lady.

So many memories of ‘Alison’s Mum’ since our days at The Lanch. Margaret accepted me as a frequent extra family member - although looking back she may well have secretly been wondering how on earth she got landed with this ginger southerner turning up all the time!
Our last meeting she was so happy to be staying with Alison and told me how much she treasured the opportunity to basically rekindle joy and share the new chapter of her life in Winchester Street where - despite her self declared memory issues - she was able to enjoy a new type of family life for as long as that was safe and possible. It should be a huge comfort to know that in her last few years she was so loved and cared for xxxx

As a friend of Sarah's, I had the pleasure of meeting Margaret on several occasions while visiting Sarah and Stephen, the first time probably being sometime in 2014. I always enjoyed talking to her, finding Margaret very kind, taking a lively interest in everything around her, and always asking how I and my family, especially my youngest daughter, who was Isabelle's friend, were. It was nice to see Margaret sitting on the sofa and taking pleasure in watching her grandchildren and their friends play and chat around her. Margaret came along, with Sarah and Stephen and the children, to pre-Christmas drinks my husband and I hosted at ours in 2014 and she brought me a beautiful Thansgiving cactus with pink flowers. I still have the plant and remember Margaret especially every time it comes into bloom. With my condolences to all the family and my prayers that Margaret's soul may rest in peace. Marie-Josée

Dear Granny

I’m sad you are no longer here, but as you were a wonderful Granny to us, I am lucky enough to have some amazing memories with you. I will always remember Christmas’s at your house, they felt so magical. You would always make us eat breakfast and brush our teeth before going to see what Father Christmas had delivered. Looking back with fondness now I can see how you wanted to build the excitement of Christmas Day. I will always have memories of coming to stay in the holidays. It always felt like a little adventure, playing in the garden in “the woods” at the bottom, taking us to kingswood and climbing trees, taking us for pub lunches as a treat, getting the dressing up box down, and running through the sprinklers in what I thought was the best garden in the world. I can’t stop thinking about your “microwave mince bean thing” for dinner, and your Lemon cheesecake was legendary. You would always call us from wherever we were playing for elevenses and we would get to choose a biscuit from the tub. Those were just some of our little rituals when we came to stay. You were firm but fair, keeping us in line but always ready with a cuddle. Thank you for being a wonderful Granny. I miss you, but these are some wonderful memories that I can always think on. Love always, and rest in peace,

Love from Emma and Dan xXx

My family and I have had the pleasure of living next door to Margaret since 2012. Margaret was a kind, thoughtful lady who always enjoyed a good chat over the fence. She always had time for our children and would greet us with a smile whenever we passed.

In recent years, I got to know Margaret quite well and would pop round to help change light bulbs or get the computer going again!

I will always remember and cherish the lovely chats we were able to share together.

Rest in peace Margaret.
