In loving memory of Peter George Redpath who sadly passed away on 14th November 2021 aged 90. A kind and gentle man who will be remembered for his endearing personality and incredible knowledge. He had a great sense of humour, with a twinkle in his smiling eyes. Peter had a lifelong love of learning and enjoyed sharing his interests with others. He had the ability to engage and interact with people of all ages from a range of different backgrounds.

Peter was born in Bow Hospital, London on 19th August 1931 to his parents George and Amelia (Millie). He also had two brothers - Ken and Roy. Peter spent his childhood, including the wartime years, living in Dagenham where he attended Hunters Hall Primary School and South Essex Technical College.

In the early 1950's Peter joined the RAF where he excelled and became a Pilot Officer. He was selected, with a small number of others, as one of the top pilots in the country and went to train with the Royal Canadian Air Force for NATO. He successfully completed the training in 1953.

Peter married Marjorie on 27th August 1955. They were married for 55 happy years.

Peter and Marjorie worked for Mobil Oil and Shell and moved to Basildon where they welcomed their daughters.

Peter worked for the Fire Protection Association for many years and then as Chief Fire and Safety Officer for British Steel.

His genuine interest in engineering led to him being part of several professional societies for many years. In particular, he was a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers of which he had been an active member for 64 years.

Peter remained busy and active during his retirement.

A devoted husband to the late Marjorie and a wonderful loving father to Christine and Helen. He will be greatly missed.

I knew Peter and then Marjorie through my parents who often had Peter over when he was here in Winnipeg during the 1950’s. A very warm and enduring friendship developed. A kind, caring and wonderful person was Peter. Sincere sympathies to you Christine and Helen

Peter was one of the most interesting and lovable people I have had the pleasure of knowing. I am sorry not to be able to attend his funeral but he will be in my thoughts all day. An absolutely wonderful person, who had a great sense of humour and the cheekiest of laughs.

I am so sorry to hear the news about Peter. He was very supportive of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers whether it was an Eastern Region, a South Essex Area or Automotive Division Essex Centre event. He always had that twinkle in his eye and sense of humour that made him a great person to know! He also came up with some helpful ideas when required. He was good hearted and enjoyed teaching young people. The IMechE will miss him and I will personally miss him and his stories (especially of being a pilot!). The place will not be the same without him.
