In loving memory of Ena Mae Hunter who sadly passed away on 25th September 2021 after a short battle with cancer. A much loved mother of six children and grandmother of nine, Ena had many friends during her lifetime. She was the youngest of ten children, born on 21 December 1937 in St Mary's Jamaica. She lived the majority of her life in South London, proudly owning her own home. This was very important to her as she had the security of a home despite originally emigrating to the UK in the late 1950s. Ena worked hard all her life to financially support her six children, including her two eldest in Jamaica. She regularly sent barrels of household goods, clothing and footwear to her sisters. In the mid 1970s, she successfully brought her son Frank and daughter Ingrid to London. Tragically she later suffered the loss of two of her other children, Cynthis in 1980 and Karl in 1996. She never recovered from their loss.

Ena was a talented baker and made many a wedding cake for family and friends. She was also a good seamstress and when her children were younger, she mended and created many garments to supplement her income. Ena did her best as a single parent to educate her children and ensure their future success. This wasn't always easy due to society's prejudice of black immigrants and single mothers. She was a very strong independent woman and we will miss her stories, generosity and her forthright opinions. May she rest in peace with Cynthis and Karl.

A few words from John O Donohue...

“Though we need to weep your loss,
You dwell in that safe place in our hearts,

Where no storm or night or pain can reach you

Let us not look for you only in memory,
Where we would grow lonely without you.

You would want us to find you in presence,
Beside us when beauty brightens,

When kindness glows
And music echoes eternal tones.”

Rest in peace Ena

  • Thanks Lorr &Robi. It was a beautiful service, but very difficult for us all. She would have loved the turnout, lots of family and close friends and neighbours.

Wishing you all strength at this time. Ena was a true lady and amazing cook. I have a blanket she gave me when I moved into my first home in London and I always think of Ena when we have it on our bed in Edinburgh. Beautiful Ena may you rest in peace.
