Robin Ian Simmonds (13 Jan 1938 - 26 Aug 2021)
Funeral Director
In loving memory of Robin Ian Simmonds who sadly passed away on 26th August 2021
Husband to Lilian, Father to Andrew and David, Grandfather to Miles and predeceased by siblings Margaret and Patrick.
Robin was a super fit cross-country runner in his heyday, managing 4min 15s against Herb Elliott in 1960 Inter Varsity Inter Service Invitation Mile and collecting several winner's cups.
A lifelong interest in aviation possibly began after walking miles with siblings to watch wartime Spitfires take off from an Essex airfield.
Robin chose to serve 4 years in the RAF and was a fully qualified glider and single engine pilot, then later an active member of Royal Aeronautical society for many years.
An initial career in electrical engineering with an apprenticeship, led to Chartered status then a change to marketing and flight simulator sales, which involved much travel around the world.
Politics was another lifelong interest, attending Swinton Conservative College as a young man, although the Thatcher years changed his views. Robin loved to get involved with committees, often becoming Chairman, including School and Cadet PTAs, Portsea Action Group, to Rotary Club and Church committees.
Robin had a distinctive voice, was good at public speaking and enjoyed long conversations.
Robin and Lilian spent the last nearly 20 years living in Knapton, after living in Portsmouth for over 30 years.
Robin bravely faced stage four cancer and debilitating strokes without complaint and fought to reach milestone 60th Wedding Anniversary with Lilian, but died a week later.
