The family has asked for no flowers to be sent. However, if you wish to make a gesture in memory of Mary, donations are welcome to our chosen charity Blind Veterans UK (www.blindveterans.org.uk)

In her early life Mary supported this charity in 1936/7 by assisting World War One Blind Veterans with walks along the Sussex coast beside their centre at St Dunstan's. In later years, after Mary was registered Blind herself, she received a great deal of support from the charity. In particular they provided her with visual aids and computer equipment which enabled her to continue writing travel articles. Donations can be made via our Just Giving page on this site or in person at the funeral.

The family would like to thank the Directors and Staff of Wessex Care Ltd who provided support to Mary in her last years at The Kimberly West Care Home, Salisbury.

A privilege to have met this lovely lady, more so in her latter years, always bright in spirit, inspirational and definitely a trend setter!

Mary's is a fascinating tale: best of living, integrating family, travel, writing and remaining keen on gardening throughout her 80s – still happy to jump on the bus heading out of town for an outing to 'her' garden with her plastic bag full of seedlings to plant out.
Mary is an inspiration, an influencer: reminding us to seek adventures and foreign landscapes; to welcome change; hang twinkle lites, and be up-for-a party; drink a little scotch and paint your nails five-colours! I'll miss her bright, daring and ever-determined spirit.

Fond memories of much motorcaravanning chat over a table of good food, whenever we met up with Mary & Archie. And Mary, intrepidly, continued her adventures after Archie's sudden death. Quite a lady! I'm so glad to have known her.

Such a lovely, ever cheery positive lady and a wonderful neighbour to me in Salisbury. A fellow traveller, always with such an adventurous spirit; what an inspiring life she lead, and one to celebrate now that she has left us, as she surely would have insisted!
