Ian Bengey of Ilfracombe,
passed away peacefully at North Devon District Hospital with his daughter Lisa and son Dean beside him on Thursday 19th August aged 73 years.
Much loved Father, Father in Law, Grandfather, Brother and Friend.
He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Ian was well known locally from his solo musician days as ‘Just Ian’ and prior to that when he was a band member of the popular North Devon groups, the ‘Living End’, ‘West Coast Sound’ and ‘The Copperfields’.
He also worked in Luxmoores, Coutant, Vinces (for Kangaroo Poo) and Drapers in Ilfracombe before he retired.
A service to celebrate Ian’s life will be held at the North Devon Crematorium in Barnstaple on Thursday 9th September at 3pm followed by a gathering at the Sandpiper in Ilfracombe afterwards.
Please feel free to wear colours if you wish or to wear black if you prefer to follow tradition.
Family flowers only please, but if you would make a donation to Devon Air Ambulance Trust in Ian’s memory, there will be a collection at the service. You can also donate c/o Braddicks & Sherborne Funeral Directors at 20 - 21 St Brannocks Road, Ilfracombe, EX34 8EQ

What a legend! A true entertainer, who loved the entertainment stage and the entertainment of his children and friends. Be it me and dean haggling over a Deano bravo sticker to complete our wwf sticker book, or terrorising Lisa and Michelle round butlins Minehead shouting “chicken!”
He only Intervened when needed, trusted us as children to make the right choices, I see the same morals in Lisa and Dean, passed on through Ollie his legacy will always live on by the foundations he laid.
A very sad day, but there is a brighter star in the sky tonight, that we should all aspire to be.
Xxxx

Ian was a smashing chap. Have seen him play in the 70's and 80's.
Always had a smile on his face.

  • Deepest sympathy to you Lisa , Dean , Elaine and all Ian's family. He was indeed a devoted Father and a special man. He will be deeply missed by you all. His sense of humour lives on through you and Dean and I hope that continues to make you laugh through the years. Love always.

  • Yet another good friend, lost forever, not his memory, that will remain with me long after his departure (I hope) Gone to join that great band of departed musicians in the beyond. RIP Ian.
