In loving memory of ‘our Tony’

Son to Alan and Constance Crosby
Middle brother to Harry and Alan
Husband to Mary
Top Dad to Helen, KatY and Lizi
Father in law to Dave, NeiL and Russ
Super Grandad to Rebecca, Charlotte, Beatrice and Ted

A fabulous family man and friend to many, loved so fondly and respected by all.

“Every man’s life ends the same way. It is only the details of how he lived and how he died that distinguish one man from another.”
- Ernest Hemingway

Here is ‘Tony Crosby’s life list’, not exclusive but started here…

Son, brother, husband, Dad, uncle Tony, Grandad, Tony, TC, action man Tony…

A climber, windsurfer, sailor, music fan, dancer, cyclist, geologist, swimmer and swim teacher. A truly genuine Yorkshireman, map drawer, map lover, rock collector, photographer, cataloguer and documenter of life and adventure.

One of life’s adventurers, embraser of innovation, newspaper reader, ‘Tony’s Taxis’ driver, tea maker, tea and biscuits lover, ‘handwriting award’ winner, snooker player, avid sports watcher, DIY enthusiast, ‘wot no’ picture creator, cyclist, family man, ice cream eater, slide show maker, party goer, holiday coordinator, events manager, games initiator, daughter motivator, wife supporter, advocate for the outdoors, bedtime story reader…

“I felt my lungs inflate with the onrush of scenery—air, mountains, trees, people. I thought, ‘This is what it is to be happy.’”
- Sylvia Plath

Tony loved and lived life with an abundance of positivity and energy. He achieved much at such a pace. Always spending his time doing the things he enjoyed, with friends, and creating happy memories with his family that he loved and cared for so dearly.

“And then there is the most dangerous risk of all – the risk of spending your life not doing what you want, on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later.”
- Randy Komisar

After fighting with depression, the loss of his love Mary, physical health issues, and a
tiring 8 months of hospital admissions, Tony passed to rest in peace at 8.08am on 1st August 2021.

While Dad, Tony, is enormously missed, and there’s a big gap where he used to be in our lives, we hope to quel the feeling of sadness that we have ‘lost him’. Instead we aim to be thankful and celebrate that we had him in our lives. TC now lives on in us and in the many, many immensely happy memories of times together.

“The struggles we endure today will be the ‘good old days’ we laugh about tomorrow.”
- Aaron Lauritsen

Ceri James donated in memory of Tony

I first met Tony in 1973 when I joined the Geological Survey at their Leeds Office in Cross Gates. He had already been there at least five years and was in the Marine Geology Group and he basically stayed in this Group until he retired in 1997.
I got to know him really well when I joined him in the Marine Geology Group in 1984 after it moved from Leeds to Keyworth. We went to sea together on a number of survey cruises off the north and west of Scotland. Tony loved going to sea, especially in the 70s and 80s when there was a huge amount of survey cruises. He was part of a ground breaking project to geologically survey and map all of the UK’s territorial waters. He became very knowledgeable about the geology of the Southern North Sea and English Channel and produced many published maps and reports which are still being used today. During this period he made many friends with geologists in the French and Dutch Geological Surveys when they collaborated on surveys and mapping.
His work with the Marine Geology Group was a perfect fit for his energy, enthusiasm and strengths. It was practical, hands on, it utilised his geological knowledge and skill and he produced results. It was right up his street.
Tony and I had been keen climbers and mountaineers in our youth in the 60s and we rekindled our interest in the late 80s. We bought a new climbing rope and started climbing in the Peak District. This grew to weekends in the Lake District and North Wales and from 1995 to 2003 we went most years for a week climbing on the Isle of Skye.
In 2004 we discovered we could fly to Venice and get to the Italian Dolomites quicker than driving to Skye and it was warmer and less wet. I used to joke with Tony that he was the man with the plan and over the next eleven years he organised the apartment and hotel bookings and flights. All I did was hire the car. We roamed right across the Dolomites and climbed over 44 ‘Via Ferrata’ routes.
Tony found some great apartments and hotels and typically he became very friendly with their owners. One of these was an old lady in Canazei who asked us one day when we were loading the car where we were going, we said “the west ridge of the Marmolada” the highest mountain in the Dolomites. “Oh, she said, “many deaths”, we had a good chuckle about that. We climbed it that day and again the following year.
Tony was always curious about people, if there was anyone at the top of a mountain he would engage them in conversation and before you knew it he seemed to have their life history. It was a thing to behold.
In all this time we seemed to be on the same wavelength about where and when to climb, whether to continue a route or go back if the weather or conditions were dodgy. The only time he’d get annoyed was if I spent too long in Italian ironmonger shops. Shopping was not his favourite pastime.
We will miss his good humour, energy and enthusiasms. He was a good companion and a great friend.

Tony and Mary took me under their wing when I first moved to Leeds to work at IGS Crossgates in 1969. I shared an office with Tony. He took me on my first climbing trip to Almscliffe, followed by trips to the Lakes. Delighted when I was able to meet him again on the crags when he joined the Yorkshire Mountaineering Club where he produced a much improved newsletter. Tremendous enthusiasm and energy. He was always laughing and fun to be with. Sad loss but great memories of him. Rob

Dad always loved the mountains and was never more happy than when he was out on the peaks, up in Scotland or over in Italy.

Many happy memories, all our children growing up round the corner in Swillington, IGS in Leeds, Tony and Graham going to sea on drilling ships and more recently with Mary and Graham a wonderful visit to Canada seeing old friends and Tony, Graham and Ceri watching rugby in Nottingham.

Tony will be remembered as always smiling and full of life, ready for the next adventure.

Tony, may you now be at peace with Mary.
God Bless.
