In loving memory of Nicholas 'Nick' Daniel Bignell, 67, who sadly passed away on Friday 30th July 2021 at Southend Hospital due to complications of motor neurone disease. His family, Julie, Christopher, Russell, Mark (brother), Sue (sister-in-law), Catherine and Jennifer (nieces) were all with him at the end.
Nick was born in London on the 14th September 1953 to the late Richard Daniel and Laura Elizabeth Bignell.
Nick left school at 15 and had various jobs, including a stint at Smithfield's before leaving to work with his father as a lift engineer. He stayed with the firm until 1996 when he then got a role at Southend Borough Council initially as a parking attendant and then as a mobile caretaker. He medically retired in 2003 and became a full time house husband.
Nick is survived by his wife Julie and sons, Christopher and Russell and grand-daughter Emma. He is also survived by two brothers, a sister and two nephews and three nieces.
Nick was very much a family man and loved spending time with his grand-daughter and being at home. He loved music and had an eclectic collection of music genres. Wherever he was there was music - classical, rock, progressive, electronic - he loved them all. He enjoyed many wonderful holidays - France, USA, Canada, Italy, Germany, Greece, Iceland - and had a particular love of Madeira.
He was a very practical mechanical man who loved tinkering around in the garage with his late father-in-law, he was looking to renovate an MG Midget with his son before his sad passing. Nick loved playing strategy games on his PC and could be found nearly every evening sat at his computer with an occasional glass of wine. He was very ‘into’ Dr Who – particularly the Patrick Troughton era and had Dr Who nights with his sons, brother and niece watching old episodes. He particularly enjoyed evenings spent with his brother Mark and his family.
He loved his animals - having 5 dogs and 3 cats. Sadly Milly (who he christened his 'little shadow') joined him on Monday after a short illness.
He was a loving, caring, goofy, loyal, generous, supportive man - a true gentle man who shall be missed enormously.
A funeral service is being held at 13.00, Tuesday 24th August at Southend Crematorium.
Flowers can be sent to Stibbards at Shoeburyness or donations can be made on-line for Motor Neurone Disease.
