In loving memory of June Winifred Barnard who sadly passed away on 1st July 2021
Daughter to the late Bob and Nellie Iles and big sister to Pat and Sheila. Born on Boxing Day in 1939 in Redhill Surrey. Mum could recollect the days of War and would remember fondly the sound of reveille being played next door in Caterham Barracks where her dad was in the Army.
Many of you will have heard the ‘Barnard’ name. Between June and her late husband Alan they had seven children, thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren, as such the Barnard name lives on. They spent the majority of their married life in Godstone, Surrey, but later retired to the Sussex coast and then to Norfolk. Sadly mum was widowed, yet got to see a lot of the lovely Norfolk coast and countryside spending time with her eldest son Mark and myself.
Having had seven children this didn’t leave a lot of time for a career, but mum enjoyed her time working in retail, particularly at Gatwick airport. Mum had a real love of social history and English literature, as such there is a huge collection of books to peruse. The love of words could be seen in her enjoyment of playing Scrabble either at home or at the Meeting Point centre. An interest in antiques and collectables led to a vast collection of interesting items. With a particular love of ceramics, which was in her blood as her mother came from the Staffordshire pottery town of Hanley.
Flora and fauna played a role and mum particularly liked to be in the garden - we’d joke that it was the ‘Wilderness Look’, preferring it that way to regimented rows. Looking out if the window viewing which birds would come and use the bird bath always made her smile. As did other visitors to the garden. A true animal lover mum rescued cats and dogs over the years and they were her world.
