In loving memory of Raymond Joseph Townend who sadly passed away on 6th July 2021 peacefully with his sheep.
Husband, Dad, Grandad, Son, Brother and friend to very many who left us suddenly and leaves a huge hole in our lives. Once met, never forgotten.

Raymond’s funeral will take place on 30th July at 10am at St Thomas’s Church in Sutton and to help with preparations we would be grateful if you could let us know if you will be attending. The church is being opened up to 50% of its normal capacity and we will also be able to have a PA system so more can join us outside if needed. After the service Raymond will be taken behind his Tractor through Sutton to Steeton, up Whitley Head, along Redcar Lane passing his sheep, up to Redcar Tarn then right over the Yorkshire bumps, down Goose Eye and up to Oakworth Cemetery.

There will be family flowers and we ask anyone who wishes to, to make a donation in his name to support the two charities, Manorlands and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance who Raymond had fundraised for, for many years. There are links to their Just Giving pages on this page.

Phil Marr donated £10 in memory of Raymond

Having moved from Westy Bank Croft 7 years ago we have only just heard from Ian the sad news of Raymond’s passing so apologies for the delay. Raymond was a friend, neighbour, raconteur and all round regular guy. We spent a lot of time sharing the view across Airedale and generally put the world right in Raymond’s characteristically unhurried way.

  • This may seem a strange amount but it went of from a close family friend in France so went on in Euros and unfortunately a fee was deducted from the donation.

Dad, today would have been your birthday. Instead of buying you a nice bottle of Whiskey we’ve made donations to the charities closest to your heart. We are heartbroken to have lost you and will always miss you and keep you in our hearts. Love Allison, Pete, Hannah and Isaac xxx

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Townsend. He let me drive his tractor a 1961 David Brown 950. I was brought up on a farm and had not driven a tractor for about 25 years. I live in sutton and put a message on Facebook for help and Mr Townsend replied and said that I could drive his tractor.
I had never met him before and people said he was kind and did a lot for the village. I have to say they were right a gentleman and even though I met him once I will never forget the kindness and patience I received.
