My John
May I just say a big “thank you” to all of you for your support and for being here today with us as we say “goodbye to John.
I never dreamed in my life time that we would lose the son we adored. We knew when he was growing up he was a very independent person. He was the easiest person in the world to bring up. Sport figured a lot in his life and I can remember when he was young I had to clean the house very early in the mornings so that we could sit and watch cricket and football on television together. Peter, his father often had to deliver his papers because he was busy playing football.
He made mistakes, as we all do, but he always kept his friends. There were such a lot of girls who came to the house crying because he had become disinterested. My daughter, Heather, was always given the task of taking them away and trying to passify them.
When he lost his friend, Henry, two years ago, how he dealt with all the arrangements and turmoil I will never know. He was faced with an impossible task but he dealt with it until the day Henry died. He would take flowers to the grave every so often and I knew in my heart of hearts that he never got over the shock of losing him.
As a family we did lots of things together and when my daughter had a complicated birth in London he drove miles to see her and the baby. The love the whole family had for him was endless. He was the best son anyone could wish for and that will never leave us. The memories we have of him will still make us smile even though he is not here. It was a privilege to be given such a wonderful son. I hope he is with Henry up there and they are living it up.
It is very unfortunate that this has happened during the pandemic but we have to tell you that only a small number of people are allowed to eat in restaurants. I am,therefore, very sorry about not being able to invite you all to come with us and have a feast and hope you will understand. If it was possible I would invite and welcome everyone of you back with us in view of the marvellous frienship you all shared with John and us.
