Sadly, we announce that our father, George Henry Smirthwaite passed away peacefully on Saturday 22nd May 2021 a few days before his 85th Birthday.
Husband of over 60 years to Valerie, father to Kerry, Debbie, Dean and Lee. Father-in-law to John and Michele. Grandfather to Alex, Jamie, Natalie and Holly, Brother, Uncle, and loyal friend to many!
Dad was the life and soul of the party. A huge character, well-loved for his sense of fun, friendly outgoing nature, loyalty and of course his stories, most of which it turns out, were true !!
He was an amazing Dad and Grandad, and we have been comforted by the love and words of support from family, friends, and ex-work colleagues. He was a big presence in all of our lives and will be deeply missed.

The funeral service and burial will take place at St Margaret’s Church, Chapel Lane, Great Barr, B43 7BA, on Tuesday 22nd June 2021 at 2.30pm.

Due to the pandemic, attendance inside the Church and at the burial afterwards, is still quite limited. However If you would like to attend, please contact a member of the family as the situation may change in line with the latest government guidelines.
We ask for family flowers only, but should anyone wish to make a donation, The Royal British Legion, were a great support to both Mom & Dad following Dad’s diagnosis with Alzheimer’s and were Dad’s favourite charity.

PHILIP WAYNE donated £50 in memory of George

With love from Lorna, Phil and Stu. We have so many memories of great times with the 'Smirthwaites' from George and Brian being friends since their teenage years, and each others' Best Men, family holidays and more dinners and parties than anyone could imagine. We are so very sorry that you have had such an awful year in losing both Val and George. We hope you will be comforted by happy memories. X

So sorry to hear of George's passing.
I remember, as a teenager, watching him one day in his garden next door to ours, tamping down his newly-laid turf with a Heath Robinson device of his own making, and putting in such a lot of effort that I thought he would burst. But it seemed to do the trick.
He gave me a lift home one day from the bus stop at The Bell Inn, when I was returning from school. During that 5-minute car journey, George gave me some life-style advice, which has stuck with me to this day. I didn't heed his advice, though; I still eat too much.

Margaret and I were so sorry to hear the very sad news about Uncle George. We have many fond memories of our Uncle, the most enduring of which was that he was always such good company. With much love from Margaret, Janet and families.
