In loving memory of Jean Margaret Evelyn Hubbard who sadly died on 20th March 2021 (her dad’s birthday). It was a peaceful end and she was looked after brilliantly by the staff at Mountbatten Hospice in Southampton. Her daughters, Jill and Hilary were with her.
Jean was born on 9th August 1932 in Suffolk. She attended Stowmarket Grammar School and followed on to teacher training college in Birmingham. She had a long and varied teaching career in primary education. The last school she worked in, and her favourite, was St Mark’s in Shirley, Southampton.
Jean married Charles Henry Hubbard on 4th April 1953 at Barham Church in Suffolk. Charles was a motorbike mechanic and for their honeymoon they travelled through France and Switzerland on a Vincent Rapide (see photos). Jean had a brother, John, who has fond memories of riding on the back of Charles’ motorbikes. He and his wife, Marilyn, live in Rutland.
When Jean and Charles were first married they lived with his parents in Stonham, Suffolk, where many of Charles’ friends and family still live. Their first house was a bungalow in Humber Doucy Lane, Ipswich.
Jean and Charles had two daughters, Jill and Hilary, both born in Ipswich. The family moved to Southampton in 1967 and lived in Archery Gardens, Woolston. Jean had a much loved grandson, Felix - Jill’s son - who is married to Anna, and two great grandchildren, Zech and Mylla. She was also a fun loving step-granny to Ethan, Paige, Isobel, Clara and Emily. She loved cats and had a great friend in her beloved Bertie.
Jean had lots of friends throughout her life, many of whom she kept in touch with on a regular basis - from her school and college days, her teaching career, her interest in France and speaking/teaching French language, voluntary work with adults with learning disabilities, her church attendance (latterly Peartree United Reformed Church) and her great interest in all things related to art and textiles.
Jean was quite poorly in the last few years of her life. Much love and thanks to Kevin, her son in law, who, as her main carer, looked after her during that time and ensured her life was comfortable and enjoyable. They had some great times together.
Please feel free to add your own memories and photos of Jean.
