In loving memory of Philip Raymond Paxman, who passed away peacefully at home, aged 71 years, having battled Mesothelioma.

Beloved husband of Gloria, adored father of Adam and much loved foster father to Craig, Philip was also a loving brother of Duncan and the late Susan, a dear brother-in-law of Elizabeth, a cherished uncle of Tara and Jane, a loved father-in-law of Anna and Gemma, and Grandpappy Pippy to Lucian. A devoted family man, he will be dearly missed.

Having apprenticed and worked with various building firms, Philip was a self-employed joiner for many years in and around York, before taking on a maintenance role at The Mount School York, where he remained until his retirement. He was also a qualified lifesaving instructor.

Outside of work, Philip had many diverse interests and hobbies. He was passionate about motorcycling with his not entirely motley gang The Hogs, walking in nature, bird spotting and swimming. He enjoyed dancing with Gloria and was a keen gardener. Philip was also a member of York Acorn Running Club, and ran competitively in all manner of marathons and fell running races. Occasionally he sat down long enough to enjoy a pint with dear friends in the Wellington Inn.

Service to take place on March 31st, 2021. Due to current restrictions, donations in Philip's memory may be given to Cancer Research UK. All enquiries to JG Fielder & Son Funeral Directors on 01904 654460.

Only just heard through my old running club friends of Phil's sad passing. We shared many runs and conversations with York Acorn. He was a true gentleman and great company. Oh and a really quick and determined runner. If they have training sessions in heaven I know who will be running them.

I only met Phil on 2 occasions which happened to be both weddings; we spent a considerable amount of time, drinking and chatting about sport, music and running. I was amazed how active he was considering he was in his mid 60s at the time and I was quizzing him on marathons and fell running. Even though I only spent 2 evenings in his company, he made a great impression me and I'm glad we crossed paths. I could tell he was a very warm, kind and generous man. RIP Phil x

"We drifted on home through the public bars,
We were ten times less by one,
Who sailed out under the morning stars
And under the rising sun"

Phil's personal qualities, his decency, integrity, and empathy were on a par with his outstanding craftsmanship. He wore his exceptionalism very lightly indeed. The passing of a very special man.
