STUART PAYNE
16.11.1972 – 25.02.2021

In loving memory of Stuart John Payne who sadly passed away at Southampton General Hospital in the early hours of Thursday 25th February 2021 aged 48.

Stu had been diagnosed at the age of 40 with Follicular Lymphoma. We were always aware that his cancer was treatable, not curable but we never gave up hope that a cure would be found. Although he suffered endless months of chemotherapy on many occasions over the years you would never had known. He was determined that his illness would not define him. He obviously had his moments of sadness and frustration but he loved life. He was happy with his ‘lot’. He had a family who he adored and who adored him, a job that he was born to do & an abundance of colleagues and friends that he was so grateful to have.

He was incredible.

In August of 2020 the Lymphoma became aggressive and attacked his central nervous system. He lost the use of his legs very early on and his eyesight diminished. Even then, in true Stuart style, he took it in his stride and courageously battled on. He still insisted on working, albeit slightly differently. He remained patient, thoughtful & funny & his sense of humour still shone through. Ever hopeful.
His visits to C2 at Southampton General Hospital became more frequent. He was a ‘regular’. A pub regular would have been how he would have preferred it but this was now his new bar and as you can imagine he was always the life & soul of the ward!! Everyone knew him & loved him there. He kept them all on their toes. At this point I would like to thank the ‘NHS Angels’ who took both of us under their wing. They were amazing friends. They made us feel so safe and loved during the hardest 6 months of our lives. They are worth their weight in gold and I will be forever grateful to every one of those special, special people.

For me, our lives started together, just the two of us and that is how it ended.

My darling Stu, thank you for 27 magical years, our two beautiful children and a life full of happiness but most of all love, so much love. We were inseparable. In our final days together you assured me that you would always be with me. I believe you. Being your wife was an honour. I will carry you in my broken heart forever x

The unbearable sadness is felt by us all:-

A treasured role model & totally loved Dad by Jordan & Tilly
Extremely Brave & Beloved Son of Carol and the late John
Adored by his Brother Richard & Sister Claire
Legendary Uncle, Son in Law, Brother in Law & friend.

I would be really grateful if you could share your personal memories of Stu on this page. I know that he meant so much to so many of you.

We have decided that we will be doing family flowers only but we would love, if you wish, for donations to Blood Cancer UK in Stu’s memory.

Yesterday I witnessed a huge outpouring of love for Stuart as we walked from his home to the church. There were people from all walks of life who knew and loved him. We all talked about him while the family and close friends were in the church for his farewell service. There was a theme running through all the conversations... What a truly lovely person and friend he was. I’m sure the family felt that love and support, and I hope they will take great comfort in the knowledge that so many people cared so deeply for Stuart and wanted to show their affection by simply being there on the roadside. Thinking of you all, God bless you XxxX

Whenever I arrived & Stu was there I knew it would be fun. His infectious smile & cheeky humour elevated everyone’s spirits. He was taken too soon but I feel privileged to have been part of his journey. Heartfelt condolences to Jo, Jordan, Tilly, Carol & all the family.

Stu
It’s been a hell of tough day saying goodbye to you today. 20 years ago you accepted me with open arms and I’ve enjoyed some cracking times with you and the family. Holidays in Calpe visiting “ze German bar”, Saturday night curries, having to cook your BBQs whilst you supplied me with endless beers and of course our trip to Padstow on my 40th - these are memories that I hold dearest.
There was so much more planned yet you were taken too early. The out-pouring of love and attendance of so many today completely overwhelmed me.
I miss you so much.
Jools x

So so sad. Have known Stu and Jo for such a long time and adored them. I had the absolute privilege of being there when Tilly was born and seeing Stu so made up with his new daughter and couldn’t wait to introduce her to her big brother. Jordan. An amazing family that shined a light wherever they were, a light so bright it will never go out.
We are here if you need us

My thoughts are with you all.
Going into cinamon bay for takeaway & not bumping into Stu for a beer at the bar just won’t ever be the same.
