In loving memory of Raymond Palmer who sadly passed away on 25th February 2021. He will be greatly missed.

Our Dad was born in 1924 and during his childhood was evacuated with his school. He also served with the Royal Corps of Signals in Burma during WW2. On his return he married Doreen in 1951. They had 3 children Carol, Christopher and Lynne.
Our Dad worked for HSBC all his life mostly in the East End of London and then in Southend.
He was a member of many societies as he had a passion for transport, in particular shipping and railways. An enthusiastic and likeable man he had many friends and he will be missed by all. He was a unique gentleman!

It was a real pleasure knowing Ray. My best memory is going out with him on a tug in the Bahamas after he had shouted to the skipper from the quay. Saw in two cruise liners from the bridge. It will be captured in one of his box of slides.

Ray was my oldest first cousin. He was extremely generous to me and my wife when we first visited England from New Zealand. He met our ship in Southampton and took us to his family home at Thorpe Bay and looked after us for two weeks until we had arranged for a bedsit in London, then took us and our luggage to that place. We saw quite a lot of Ray and family during our two years stay in London. When we returned to NZ we kept in touch with letters and Christmas Cards.
Ray was charismatic, enthusiastic in all his many activities and very knowledgeable, especially to do with railways and shipping, interests that we shared. I will miss his cheery voice and loud laugh. I send my sincere condolences to Carol, Chris and Lynne and their families. RIP Ray.

I first met Ray about 45 years ago but it is in the last 6-7 years that we have spent the most time together on trips and visits to the hospital with Carol. We have shared many a laugh and interesting moments. Rest in peace Ray, you were one of life’s characters!

I have known Ray since the early 1970s through our shared interest in buses and railways and greatly valued his friendship, seeing him regularly at the South East Essex Railway Society and at the Essex Bus Enthusiasts Group (when we met in Southend), as well as at various events and visits. His wide knowledge of transport systems always made for lively discussions and he will be sorely missed. My deepest condolences.
