In loving memory of Alfred Edward Lowrey who sadly passed away on 17th February 2021
Alfred Lowrey was born in 1929 into The Salvation Army. His parents, who were Salvationists, owned the green grocers in Hadleigh for many years. Alf went to school in Hadleigh, after which he did his National Service, being stationed at Alton in Hampshire and Gretna in Scotland, among other places. Gretna held a very special association for Alf, as he attended the Carlisle Salvation Army where he made some very good friends, who he visited whenever possible throughout his life. Alf was a very talented musician, specialising in brass instruments, and became a Bandsman in The Salvation Army from a very young age.
He married Shirley in 1956 and they had four children together. He had a love of all animals, and started keeping bee’s from a very young age, whose honey he would sell to local people. While he and Shirley were raising their family, they also had many animals which included dogs, cats, chickens, rabbits, and even a goat! He could not bear any cruelty to even the smallest of creatures, and in his later years had frogs and newts in the pond at the end of his garden, as well as a large fish pond.
Along with playing in The Salvation Army Band in Hadleigh, he also joined the London Fellowship Band and enjoyed touring with them for several years. When he was younger he worked as a motor mechanic in Hadleigh for quite some time, following this he then worked for Mobil Oil at the refinery as a laboratory technician, testing oils. Alf was there until his retirement.
During his retirement he loved to play lawn bowls and won many trophies. He enjoyed twenty years of lovely holidays and cruises with his wife, Shirley, and had a wonderful time, with many new experiences.
He leaves behind, Shirley, his wife of 64 years, four children, nine Grandchildren, and seven Great Grandchildren.
He will be greatly missed by all of his family.
