In loving memory of Roy Travers who sadly passed away on 21st February 2021

Dad reached the grand old age of 95 and, until dementia afflicted him in his last year, was a remarkable, strong, independent and caring man. He spent his adult life giving himself to others, through his work, in his family and at his church. He was a devoted dad to Mark and myself and so proud of his grandchildren, Joel and Hannah. He absolutely came into his own as a carer for mum in her final years and Aunty Doreen during their brief marriage ... the most frustrating part was that he would never willingly accept help: such a proud and independent man! He was Uncle Roy not just to his nieces and nephews, but to the many children who passed through the church doors of the Gospel Hall, both at Salford Street and Carlton Hill.

He began life in Cornwall, of course, where he lived with his parents and his sister Mabel, who is now 99! Cornwall was very special to us as a family and was our holiday destination annually. He remained a Cornishman at heart.

It is hard to pick from the many things I could record here so I'm just going to leave it by saying thank you dad, I am so glad to have been your daughter and that you ended your life contented and at peace with God. You, mum and Aunty are reunited now with your Lord! God bless, Dad.

Many happy memories of your summer holidays with us in Launceston Uncle Roy.
As others have mentioned you were always the driver, taking us to the beaches. Thank you for the happy days.
With love and fond memories.

Roy was at school when war broke out but as soon as he could He volenteered to join the RAF and still held the letter he recieved from a high ranking office commending him , He flew in Lancaster bombers, as a rear gunner he said how bitterly cold it was even with heated gloves and boots.
Later on, he enrolled at Cliff College, in Derbyshire taking part in Missions, with a handcart carrying all the equipment needed for some beach missions and others closer to home.
He faithfully served the Lord as Pastor at the Gospel Hall for many, many years, in the winter months getting there two hours before the service to switch the boiler on. Always a welcoming smile, always a Wesley hymn and we appreciated his wise counsel.

Uncle Roy, a true gentleman in every sense of the word, a man of great faith, dedicating a lifetime of service to his church and devoted to our beloved Auntie Mary and in his final years, to Auntie Doreen. Uncle Roy always seemed to have plenty of energy and, unsurprisingly, when we came home in 2015 he was still going strong, driving his car, active with his church and by then having become a significant care giver for Auntie Doreen. We were amazed at his longevity and his ability to put on a very nice high tea for his Canadian guests!
I believe Uncle Roy was the first car driver in the family. One of my earliest childhood memories(apart from his rich Cornish accent which he never lost) was being driven to Matlock one night for the lights, very exciting, and even more impressive, he even drove a bus on family outing to a zoo.
Of particular interest also was when we learned of his service in the RAF during the war and he brought out some old photographs and military documents. It is no wonder that Uncle Roy's generation is referred to as the "finest generation" and he certainly epitomized all those qualities of service, loyalty and responsibility.
To Uncle Roy, our last Uncle, may you rest in peace.

To the most wonderful father a loving son & daughter could ever have. He lived for his family. He lived to help others. He finally decided to leave this mortal life, when he couldn't help any more. I'll miss you so much dad. Say hello to mum for me. Xxx

Roy has been my brother-in-law for over 60 years and in that time there has never been a cross word between us. He was a kind, caring and thoughtful man and a wonderful husband to my sister Mary. Nothing was too much trouble in his love and care for her, and subsequently the same for Aunty Doreen when they married.
Our families have some lovely memories of times spent together. I especially remember a 'big' family holiday we had when Roy was pivotal to our enjoyment - he was the driver of the mini-bus we hired to take us to the Isle of Wight. I can see him now scrambling up the ladder to load all our luggage on the roof of the bus (we had a good laugh at his expense) his energy was boundless. We had a lovely time.
I shall miss not ever again being able to have an afternoon cup of tea with Roy and Doreen - small but lasting pleasures.
Thank you Roy, good bye and much love.

I will miss Uncle Roy so much because along with Auntie Mary he played a pivotal role in the most formative years of my life. Along with acting as an additional parent and guardian while dad was busy supporting our family through work, Uncle Roy also set an example that placed me on the path which led me to eventually accept Jesus as my saviour.
All the memories I have of him are happy ones and he has always been there with words of love and encouragement through the most difficult times of my life including the long period I spent in the hospital. You could always count on a warm welcome both at the bungalow and the church where he was so happy serving the Lord he loved.
As you might expect, it was all the little things that make the warmest memories for me such as his cheery manner, great tea making skills and a seemingly endless supply of biscuits and cake. While his passing has, of course, made me sad, I take joy in the knowledge that he has lived a full and purposeful life. He led us all by his shining example of what an authentic Christian life should look like, serving his family, friends, church and the wider community.
I know that he will be sadly missed by all who knew him, but I look forward to being reunited with him in the kingdom to come.
Blessings in Christ Uncle Roy

Fond memories of a precious uncle without whose support my dad would have struggled to keep his family together. Uncle together with Aunty Mary looked after the wellbeing of me Angela, Andrew & Julie throughout our childhood. Each morning at 7 am Uncle would check that our kitchen light was on, if not, he would come through the gate that divided our gardens, knock on our door to make sure we were up; our dad having left for work early each day.
He was involved in Sunday School Sunshine Corner, Bible Class and Sunday School Anniversaries, and Sunday School Trips in the summer.
As Ruth & I were close in years we did many things together and Uncle, Ruth, my Dad and I went to the Goose Fair and Uncle sat between Ruth and me on the Big Wheel. I also went to Prestatyn for a holiday with them.
I remember with fondness happy times when all our Aunts, Uncles, and cousins would holiday on the East Coast where we would take over the beach playing cricket etc and one time Uncle Roy and Uncle Derrick gave me a leg and a wing and threw me screaming into the sea.
Uncle liked to do the cryptic crossword each day and occasionally I would sit with him in a poor attempt to 'assist'.
Back in the early 70’s (before hairdryers) I used to sit on the lounge floor and he would towel dry my hair.
When I was about 16 I went to work with Uncle Roy at the DHSS where he was an EO and I had temporary work as an admin. assistant. I had to sign the Official Secrets Act.
He opened his heart, his home and his family to ours and for that and everything else I have shared with him, I am eternally grateful.
Much Love
Pauline x
