In loving memory of Phil Smedley who sadly passed away on 10th February 2021. The much loved dad of Emily and Alice, dear son of John and Susan and devoted grandad of Imogen also, the much treasured brother of Andrea and Michael and a dear nephew, uncle and brother-in-law.
If you are planning to attend Phil's funeral service, our chosen dress code is smart and not black.
A collection box will be available at Barnby Moor Crematorium, the proceeds from which will fund a commemorative plaque in Doncaster Rovers Memorial Garden.

Andrea Smedley donated £48 in memory of Phil

Thank you to everyone who attended and made a donation at Phil's funeral. The money collected was used for a memorial plaque in the Doncaster Rovers Memorial Garden, close to the main entrance to the Stadium. The remainder has been split evenly between CALM and RNLI and donated here. Thank you again, Andrea

It would be fair to say that Smed and I argued a lot! But he was a constant in my teenage years along with many of the faces in the photo above, from a trip to Guernsey. I can't quite believe that I will never get to have another debate with you Smed RIP

  • It was very much a group effort David - both of the family and all of you who have said such lovely things about Phil over the last few weeks. Those comments have supported us all. It was very fitting that the Celebrant read the words of the people who loved him. Thank you so much for coming yesterday, Andrea

Smed, far too many memories, but not too many I can write on here. From getting to know you in the 6th form at Danum, knocking around in those endless summers during Uni, tennis and bowls in Grove Park, nights in the Cumberland and round town. To being your best man, but mainly following the Rovers home and away, travelling ridiculous distances to meet up at random midweek fixtures, just for the pleasure of spending a couple of hours in your company ( it certainly wasn't for the quality of the football) - From the Conference play off final at Stoke, The Johnstone's Paint trophy final at Cardiff and that wonderful day at Wembley, all my best Rovers memories have been with you my friend. You were so much fun to be with, but I knew you always had my back. You were always there when things got tough, often with practical advice, mainly just with a pint. The love and support you showed me, Sam and the boys will be for ever appreciated. To the boys you will always be Uncle Smed, and Owen still recalls watching England away games on TV trying to spot your flag and Harvey still knocks out a 'beardy grow ' from time to time. My friend I am amazingly grateful for our years of friendship and I'll miss you so much. Next time I'm allowed into the Keepmoat I'll give them a ' Gerrit forard Rovers' just for you. Rest well Mate. xxx

  • Dear Gav, thankyou for your lovely words, they mean so much. Phil often told the tale of meeting up at Donny games when you had both said you were not going, him turning it you with a hey up Gav and you replying hey up Smed. Thankyou for being his friend. Sue xx

Thank you Phil for helping make those years in middle school and at Danum so much more bearable than they would have been without you. Thank you for those many hours...days...weeks... of D&D and all the monsters we killed and gold we acquired. Thank you for making wasting time so much fun. I remember a chaotic weekend visiting you at Durham - a blur so it must have been fun. And those holidays in Guernsey and Portugal - happy days.

Cat de Jonge donated in memory of Phil

I was very fortunate to work for Phil at NHS Wakefield PCT/CCG, but that relationship quickly blossomed into friendship. Phil often had me in stitches with his (mostly football-related) anecdotes as well as his fabulously observational humour. Quick witted, kind and wise, Phil took me under his wing and provided more than just management, he was my mentor and guide as I navigated through the complex world of mental health commissioning. Phil was passionate about his work and exacting in his expectations of a good job well done - as much of himself as of everyone else. I was so sad to hear of his untimely passing, the world is a poorer place without him in it. My very sincere condolences to Phil's family and friends xxx
