Beverley’s Eulogy
Beverley was born on the 12th October, 1945. Her place of birth was Hemsworth, Yorkshire. It was rumoured that she was born in a pub called “The Beverley Arms” that served Beverley Ales!
My first recollection of seeing Beverley was when we both were about 6 or 7 years of age. Like most families, Beverley’s was being re-housed post war.
Her family, Mum, Dad, David, Beverley, Suzanne and Georgina were to move into No.1 Brenley House near Guys Hospital. Geoffrey and Dean, the two younger brothers were born later. The Pocknell home was very close to the bike sheds and swing park and being on the ground floor, their front door was always open.
On her first day at Snowsfields School. Beverley was given a note from her Mum and Dad to take her siblings to school. David had already been seen running of to school with his note! That probably was a fair indication that in the future her life would be dedicated to looking after children! Beverley made lifelong friends at Snowsfields especially with Shelia Hayter and Patty Collins. She loved being Shelia’s mate because Sheila was smart, had lovely hair ribbons and Shelia’s parents always treated her so well.
Beverley made it quite clear that children would always be a big part of our life together. We are lucky enough to have three terrific sons Jon, Paul and Joe, seven grandchildren, one great grandchild and three marvellous daughters in law.
When we were living in South London we were registered as ‘Foster Carers’ for Lewisham Borough Council and this went a long way to fulfil Beverley’s love for looking after and caring for so many children.
Today, there are many parents, with their children that Beverley looked after, who wanted to be here, and it seems to me that Michelle Brown here with us today is a representative for all of them.
Beverley kept in touch with so many of the children and their families and many have become very close friends. We were able to travel the world for quite a few years, but there were times, particularly far from home, far East Australia etc… when Beverley would almost be fitting to get back to the “kids”. Particularly when our first granddaughter Lily and grandson George, were born it was a race from the airport to get to see them first.
Moving to Shoeburyness was a great move for both of us and with Beverley working at “Little Fishes” was an official “God Send”. It became a life changing event for the both of us and certainly brought us closer to enhancing our Christian Faith.
