Margaret Lilian Bowen-West, born on 5th August 1938 at 26 Howards Road, West Ham, London.

Mum was the second daughter to Robert Charles James Southwood, a house decorator, and Lilian Margaret Southwood nee Frewin all residing at 103 Prince Regent Lane, Plaistow, London.

A little later the third daughter arrived to complete the family; Angela, Margaret & Barbara.

During the war Bob was on active service and Lilian and the girls were evacuated to Westbury, Wiltshire. They were initially billeted in the vicarage but over time moved to their own home, Brookhaven, just outside the churchyard that backed on to the brook. The girls would reminisce over the years about their church cleaning antics; Angela, a good pianist, playing the Harry Lime theme on the church organ whilst Mum & Barbara both with dusters tied to their feet would skate round the church to polish the floors!

Once in their late teens the family moved back to London, but Mum was appointed a post to care for and support the boarders in the local school in Westbury where the girls had attended themselves. Bob and Lilian agreed and so for a few years Mum resided at the school and worked there.

After a few years Mum moved to be with the family in London. Mum got a clerking job in an office at Hyde Park Corner and it was here that Mum caught the attention of a young man. After a few walks along the river, cups of tea in Joe Lyons Cafes Margaret & Peter (Dad) had their first date to see The Boyfriend at The Wyndhams Theatre on 6th May 1960.

On 24th February 1962 at St Patricks Church, Plumstead Peter West Bowen-West, an oil installation supervisor, married Margaret Lilian Southwood, a fashion house clerk.

This day started their married life and their travels to many homes in the UK as Dad was promoted through what was Shell-Mex & BP which then split, and he worked for BP Oil until retirement.

They lived in Clapham, Gravesend, Swansea, Bristol, Fareham, Cheam and then Banstead.

Their daughter Tracey Margaret Bowen-West was born in Gravesend.

Their son Robert Lygon Bowen-West was born in Swansea.

Mum was a housewife. Both Mum & Dad were known as a couple who would always welcome you to their home, and when they did you were well fed and watered, you often stayed over and frequently joined them for games of bridge, scrabble, north sea or carpet golf!

Whilst in Cheam they enjoyed travelling together across the globe once Dad retired and celebrated both Tracey’s marriage to Chris and Robert’s marriage to Caroline. They then downsized and moved to Banstead where they welcomed their two grandsons Max and Mathew.

Mum enjoyed many years playing both badminton and tennis at least three times a week and loved to go to watch tennis at Eastbourne and Wimbledon, where she went with Dad and friends. Mum’s other passion was gardening which she spent a lot of time over and was immensely proud of.

Since Dads death in 2006 Mum gave up playing tennis and badminton and took on the church garden at St Anns which flourished under her green fingers.

Dear Tracey and Robert,
Many years ago your Mum and Dad visited us in Tallahassee, Florida and it seems like it was just yesterday. Your mum glowed from the moment she arrived until she left. She sprinkled joy and sunshine all over us. The warmth we felt has lasted all of these years. Thinking of her just makes me smile. Our children were quite young at the time but they to have fond memories. Our eldest Christopher and Tedora travelled to London 20 years ago with their grandfather and made a stop in London and fortunately spent an afternoon in absolute delight as your mum put out a spread of all sorts of goodies that they had never seen before nor since. We send you warm hugs from across the pond and the memories of your mum and dad with last our lifetimes.

Dear Tracey, Robert, and family
We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of your mother, and would like to offer our sincere condolences.
The last time I spoke to her she told me of her illnesses that she had suffered from and I told her of what Paul and
I had gone through. She promised me she would come round for tea with us . Every year without fail I would receive a birthday card from her. How she remembered I do not kow! Also of course a Christmas card! I remember once when Raymond, Michael, and Robert were at Edge Hill College Margaret brought them home after school and I cooked scrambled eggs ! I'm not sure if Robert remembers !
Paul, Michael, Raymond , and I will always remember her with great affection. She was so warm, friendly,
and outgoing. She was a very special woman .

Dear Tracey and Robert
Thank you for letting me know about your Mum’s death; I lost my Peter nearly 5 years ago- it is something we all have to adjust to at some stage ,although that doesn’t make it any easier. I believe your Mum found it hard to lose her Peter. I have telephoned a couple of tennis friends,so I expect they will pass on the news if they see others ( the tennis club no longer exists). May God help you to cope at this difficult time.

I first met Margaret at cricket where Peter was playing for the Old Mercurians and my husband Colin who sadly passed away in 2017 also played. Colin and your father were at the school together at Hatch End. I remember we had great times talking away at these matches and never really watching the proceeds Later on after we were both married and had a family we were only able to meet up at the school reunions, enjoying each others company and catching up on all the news. I will remember Margaret with great affection and I have some wonderful memories of our times together.

Dear Tracey and Robert
So sorry to hear the news of your Mum's passing. Reading her obituary brought back so many memories of the good times we shared in Fareham. She was always such a kind and supportive friend! We kept in touch throughout the years and I always harboured the hope that one day I would be able to visit her and we would catch up again. Alas, that is now not possible, but I shall always feel privileged to have known her and the memories of those happy days when we were all young will live with me forever.
God bless you, rest in Peace Margaret.
