Funeral Director
In loving memory of Walter (Dave) Hughes who sadly passed away on 22 January 2021.
Dave was born in Southampton on 26 January 1947 and lived with his mum and dad and sister Lydia in Lyon Street, Southampton. He went to Central School and during this time delivered orders all over Southampton for the local butcher. When Dave left school he became an apprentice electrician with B A Correy. Dave worked as an electrician until he went to work for Red Funnel ferries in the parcels office. In 1970, Dave married his first wife, Taina and they had two daughters, Tara and Sacha.
In 1972 they decided to try their hands in the pub trade and initially worked at a hotel on the Isle of Wight before obtaining a posting with Berni Inns in Oxford. Dave and Taina separated in 1975. Dave was still working for Berni Inns when he was asked to cover as holiday relief in Yeovil and this was when he met Janet on 7 May 1976. After meeting Jan, he left Berni Inns, moved to Yeovil and was employed by Westland Helicopters as an aircraft electrician building electrical looms for helicopters.
Dave and Jan got married in November 1978 and had two daughters, Alison and Susannah (Susie). Dave went back to Red Funnel in 1991 and the family moved to Southampton the following year. He worked at Red Funnel until he retired in 2009, going back to work as holiday relief for two summers after this. Dave was popular at Red Funnel and always had lots of stories of the celebrities that he met who were travelling to the Isle of Wight, in particular during the Isle of Wight festival season.
Dave loved all sports but in particular football and Southampton Football Club. He was over joyed when he was able to get an FA Cup Final ticket in 2002.
He always loved movies and theatre. In his later years he joined Hamble Players and later Bishopstoke Players and appeared in many pantomimes and plays with both groups. His favourite role was appearing as Jim in the Vicar of Dibley in 2018 with Bishopstoke, which sold out every night and was the most profitable show they had ever done.
After retiring from Red Funnel, Dave took up his new role as full time Grandad to Alfie, Oscar and Annabelle. He was delighted at finding out about the arrival of both Chester and Leo in 2019.
Dave will always be loved and remembered by his family and friends, taken from us too soon but leaving us in his prime.
