In loving memory of Robert Arthur (Bob) Spouge who sadly passed away on 26th January 2021.

Bob was born on 31st May 1932 and spent most of his 88 years in Gunthorpe. His parents, Harold and Clara, lived above the village shop (which stood where Bramley Close now joins Main Street). Bob attended Gunthorpe Primary School (now Tom Brown’s restaurant) and Southwell Minster School (in the buildings that are now Minster Chambers). In 1950 he entered the RAF for his National Service, working in the Post Office of Honington airfield in Suffolk. Following the death of his father, Bob managed the village shop and Post Office for 40 years until its closure in 1994. His older sister Gwen sadly passed away in 1991. Bob greatly enjoyed cricket, playing for Blyth CC, supporting Notts CCC and helping Caythorpe CC in his retirement. He also loved horses, helping with working farm horses as a child and building show-jumping courses as a parent. He was married 64 years to Olive, and also leaves children John and Margret, grand-children Charlotte, Hazel, Lucy and Amy and great-grandson Tommy. He passed away peacefully at home on 26th January 2021.

His funeral will be at Gedling at 12:30 on Wednesday 17th February. Covid-19 restrictions limit us to 30 people attending, but the funeral car will pass through Gunthorpe about 12:00 and there will be a webcast of the service from 12:30. Please contact johnspouge@gmail.com for login details.

Family flowers only please. We would welcome donations for Caythorpe Cricket Club sent to AWLymn, Radcliffe & District, 59 Main Road, Radcliffe on Trent, Nottingham NG12 2BJ

It was with great sadness that I heard of Mr Spouge's death, what a lovely man he was. I remember riding down to the corner shop on my go kart as a child, parking outside and looking what I could buy for 10p. He would often do me a deal as I usually only had 10p but generally came away with sweets totalling far more. He was Jack of all Trades, not only looking after the sweets but also serving on the meat counter and then helping Mrs Greece's on the till. He will be sadly missed in the village, sending much love to all the family from Ian, Sue, Janet, Roland & Joan Dawes xx

So sorry to hear of Bobs passing he has been a part of my life for so many years. I spent a good part of my childhood playing with John in Bobs orchard, and visited his old and new store almost everyday to buy sweets and pop, following in the footsteps of both my Grandma and my Mum who would use the shops on a daily basis.
Through a mutual love of cricket I have seen a lot of Bob at Caythorpe Cricket Club, where he always had stories to tell, sometimes including my Dad who Bob always spoke so well of. I will never forget Bobs kindness to my Dad when he lost his sight.
I will so much miss seeing him bombing around on his scooter and perched outside Richards shop where we had many a good chat.
RIP Bob, you truly were one of the good Guys.

  • This was Bob's mother's 90th birthday party in 1988 with family and friends. How many can you recognise?

Heartfelt condolences to Olive and all the family. Bob was a lovely, generous man. I spent many hours with him at Caythorpe.....even on his scooter Bob would still come down midweek, with no matches on, just for a chat about cricket and to give me and many others advice on the wicket, grass and machines....Terrific bloke and a pleasure to spend time with.....RIP Bob.....🏏🏏 Still got β€œBob 1”, an old wheelbarrow ,going strong!

My thoughts abs prayers are with Olive and family . I first met Bob at the village tea shop . He was such a kind person with a wonderful sense of humour . He always made everyone laugh and feel better . He seemed to always look on the bright side of life and I enjoyed seeing him out often in passing when he went out on his scooter .
