Victor Walter Wilkinson passed away after a short illness on the 9th January 2021, aged 89.

Born Victor Charles on 16th August 1931 to Anne Walker in Chorleywood, adopted by Alice and Walter Wilkinson and then Leonard Barnes, Victor grew up in wartime Ipswich. Married for 64 years to Sheila who died in 2017, their children Margaret, Christine, Ian and Andrew, grandchildren David, Megan, Betsan, Gwenllian, Matthew, Lois and Daniel and great grandchildren Gage, Leon and Evelyn all continue to celebrate his life and memories.

Victor graduated from Ipswich’s Northgate Grammar School, served in the Royal Airforce and worked at the Atomic Weapon’s Research Establishment, Orfordness and the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough. He flew in many dozens of experimental aircraft and broke the sound barrier just before retirement in 1991. Victor continued flying to beyond his 85 birthday.

Victor will be remembered by all for his lifelong passion and love of flying, cricket, fine tipples, gardening and most of all, his family.

One of a kind!

We were Victor and Sheila''s neighbours for all of their time in Kirton. Many a yarn was told over the garden fence. We had good discussions about cricket and Victor always use to pull my leg about me supporting Ipswich Town FC !!!
Victor lived to a grand age - he will be missed.

Thank you for inviting us to be part of Victor's funeral. We enjoyed hearing about his interesting life and how much his family loved him.
I used to enjoy a cup of tea with Sheila and Victor and swapping sightings of the birds we had seen.
He would have so enjoyed the current English cricket team's success.

Thank you to all the family for inviting me to share in Victor's Memorial service. It certainly was a celebration of his interesting life. I knew Victor and Sheila for quite a while and heard many of the stories about his passions and achievements. He was a good story teller with a dry sense of humour too.
I have been most impressed by the excellent care he has received from his devoted children. No family could have done more to show their love and gratitude to their beloved Dad. My sincere condolences to you all, may the good memories soon overtake the final sad ones.

So many fond memories of you Grandad. Of you trimming green beans at the table, of you trying to explain to me how to read a map on looong journeys from Wales (I still can’t read them), of you swimming out too far in Felixstowe and winding grandma up, of you giving me malt whiskey to try, so many more. Cysga’n dawel (sleep peacefully). I know you loved Auden, I think the only poet I heard you speak of, but I find no comfort there. I’ll always cherish the love of nature that you and Grandma taught us so Wordsworth speaks more to me in sad times.

‘The best portion of a good man's life: his little, nameless unremembered acts of kindness and love’ Wordsworth

We first met Victor in 2014 at my daughter Kallee's and Andrew's wedding in Santa Cruz, California. We all appreciated a week of exciting wedding festivities while getting to know Victor, Sheila, Margaret, and Allan. The highlight was the actual wedding. We sat a table with Victor and Sheila, enjoying their delightful company. When the dancing started, I mentioned to Victor that in the U.S. it is customary for the mother of the bride and the father of the groom to dance with each other. He said he would like that, but he was concerned about leaving Sheila at the table without him. Andrew overheard the conversation and said he would gladly sit with his mother while his father and I had a dance. And dance we did! It was very sweet. Victor was a lovely man, and I am a richer person for having known him. He will be missed.

  • Farewell Victor. Almost ourlast conversation with you was to point out that a visitor had noticed your flying suit model had bare feed! Next time we met you handed me your well polished flying boots, which are now fitted to the model. Great character, always ready to chat with the public!! RIP. Ian MHAS
