In loving memory of Christopher Henry Corns who sadly passed away at Royal Derby Hospital on 11th January 2021, aged 66 years. Loving husband of Debbie, a proud father of Michael and father in law of Kathryn, and a cherished grandad to Minnie and George. Due to the restrictions of COVID-19, a small private service for Chris will be held at Bretby Crematorium.

He was a beloved brother to many of his siblings and will be sorely missed amongst them and their families. His determination in life shone through as he committed to providing for his family and his altruistic nature has resulted in a great deal to be proud of. From his mid-forties, the Air Cadets was a large part of his life, where he made many friends, and he loved nothing more than helping young people achieve. He would say his proudest achievement in his later years was his beautiful cottage and garden that he cherished with his wife Debbie and spent many hours bringing it to perfection. His all-rounded skills he developed throughout his life with buildings, engineering, and gardens will leave a lasting reminder of his willingness to help others. Chris will be missed by many who share happy memories of his kind, down to earth and humorous character.

Chris's family wishes to thank all of the staff at Royal Derby hospital who were involved in caring for him during this difficult period and all of the support and messages they have received from family and friends.

Donations in Chris's memory in lieu of flowers can be made to 1444 (Brownhills) Squadron Air Training Corps (in cash or cheque) sent c/o Murray's Funeral Directors.

I feel so sad that Chris has been taken from this world far too soon. I loved his vitality for life- always on the go with a building project, the garden, the chickens. Such energy for life that I really admired and I’m sure will be missed by so many. Lots of love to Debbie and the family.

What a wonderful man! His sense of humour has had me in stitches over the years and he would do anything to help out, no matter how larger or small. I have truly lost a great friend and neighbour.

It is not often that someone touches your heart when you meet them but he certainly did.

Thinking of Debbie and the family at this sad time.

Love Jayne and Roger x

I was so saddened to hear of Chris passing away. Although I only knew Chris a couple of years after moving into the village of Walton I have never met a nicer chap. Always there to offer a helping hand, one year I was struggling to get my Xmas lights working and he came and sorted it for me. A genuinely lovely person. RIP Chris x

Chris, my dear friend and neighbor gone far too soon, far too young. You were always so generous with your time and expertise. I'll never forget all the jobs you did for me and no matter what was needed,a screw, nail, piece of angle iron or guttering your stock phrase was"I've got some of that in the shed". I'll miss your quirky sense of humour always funny and light-hearted but always saying it as it is. Your passing has left a gaping hole in the lives of all that knew you. RIP Chris

From the moment I met Chris back in 2007, it was clear that passion, honesty and humour ran through him. Joining him at 1444 Squadron as his Adjutant, his character traits left a big mark on me that continue to impact me today. He taught me that leadership isn’t about getting the job done right first time or being the first at everything, it’s about looking after the people around you, making sure they’re safe, well and happy to enable them to be successful. I keenly remember being sent home a number of times straight after parade nights when a busy day of work caught up with me! He also showed me the importance of recognising a job well done, striving for excellence but not at the expense of encouraging people to always improve themselves.

When I took over command of 1444 from Chris in 2008, I was truly fortunate that Chris agreed to stay on the squadron staff and lead our DofE programme, an area I believe was his true calling with the Air Cadets. I never had to check on what Chris was doing or ask him to change anything: he always had a plan and knew where every single cadet was on their journey. He’d update me every fortnight on progress, when he’d bring me an updated tracker and clear direction about what he needed from me so he could help them to succeed. Our unit’s DofE success during that time is down to his commitment and determination, with (literally) hundreds of cadets having benefited from this over the years.

More than this, Chris was a positive character to be around - he was never short of a joke or funny comment that would lighten any situation! When you needed someone to help you out, Chris was always the first to volunteer and was always utterly dependable - personally and professionally. I remember fondly the hours we spent on BASC camps talking to the early hours in the caravans(!) and chasing cadet groups over the hills for DofE from one of our squadron minibuses. He was always easy to talk to, always honest in what he said and doing what he did.

The words left by so many others across so many platforms reflect the high esteem that Chris was held in by so many people. My only regret is that we lost touch over the years as I moved on from the organisation and overseas. A true gentleman and fierce friend, I know that his legacy will be the impact he made on his family and hundreds of other people over the years and the many, many happy moments he shared with them.

My thoughts are with Debbie, Mike, Kat, Minnie, George and his wider family at this time. Rest in peace.

So upset to hear you have left us so early. Met you at 1444 ATC as a CI. Attended many camps: especially
Shugborough and Weston Park, Dining Inns, 1st Aid Training at the sqn was always a blast. I remember you asking if I would put a few cadets through their swimming proficiency badges and Lifesaving for DofE and you would ship 15+kids every week to our club (more when training for the swimming competition!) You were slways there for the young people and guided them through. Every Friday after cadets you and my Dad would pop down the Chase (followed by many of us) Always laughing and smiling and always willing to help out. Will miss you. God Bless!
