Mum was born in Paignton, South Devon on 20th May 1938. She had a happy childhood ,even though 7 years of it was spent during the war. Her family took in evacuees throughout. She went to Hayes Road Primary School, worked hard and eventually gained entry to Totnes Grammar school. After leaving school, she worked in a music shop ,where she learnt how to play the accordion . She played it with a fellow colleague at holiday venues in the bay.
Mum met dad at the Spa Ballroom ,Torquay, and the band was playing the “Adoration Waltz”which became their song.
After a very happy courtship , dad proposed and they were engaged on New Years Eve 1957. Their wedding took place on 10 th January 1959 and they honeymooned in London.
A year on, and I arrived , followed by my brother Michael, two years later.
Mum was like most women of the time, a fabulous homemaker, a devoted wife and mum...we had the most wonderful childhood, and both mum and dad worked hard to provide us with a lovely home and annual holidays .
Eventually ,my brother Mike and I ,left home, married and raised families of our own. Mum just adored all of her grandchildren, Joanna,Jonathan,Beverley and Stephanie, creating further special memories, and when the great grandchildren (Felicity,Jack &Lewis)started to arrive, she was over the moon.
Having no responsibilities, mum and dad found time to travel the world ,and saw some amazing sights and done some wonderful things together. A truly happy and devoted couple.
Mums hobbies were all types of crafts, being an expert knitter, embroiderer, dressmaker...she could accomplish anything creative. She enjoyed reading ,jigsaws ,crosswords and other puzzles , and also enjoyed helping dad with all his D.I.Y projects.
Music remained a big part of her life, enjoying all the musicals as well as just simply listening to various types of music .
Mum was an incredible cook...her meals were wonderful and I blame mum for all the extra pounds I gained...her cooking was excellent ,comforting and nutritious ...and we all often wanted “seconds” !!
Another love of our mums was her little Jack Russell , Scamp..her little fur baby who was pampered and loved very much .there are some hilarious tales to tell regarding Scamp!
Mum led a very full life...enriched by all her family and friends , she would help anyone ,a very kind hearted lady. She was totally devoted to dad, and had a wonderful marriage, reaching almost 62 happy years......she was absolutely thrilled to receive a card from her majesty on their Diamond Wedding Anniversary.
Mum had been poorly for quite a while, and fought very bravely . She slipped away in her sleep ,so very peacefully...dignified to the end.....
But...it’s not the end , mum lives on through us , her children, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren...and we will always endeavour to be the very best we possibly can be ..........in honour of such a wonderful and beautiful lady...
Love you always and forever
