Helen was born in Chard in November 1960, the second child of Bob and Barbara Marshall, both now deceased. Her elder brother Rob lives and works in Chard. Helen attended Holyrood school and after ‘o’ levels worked briefly for Peel electronics in Ilminster before joining the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office in 1978.
In the course of her career at UKHO she was promoted from Cartographic Assistant to Cartographic Draughtswoman and later to Mapping and Charting Officer. She started her career using a brush and ink to create and update the master bases for paper charts and finished using a Geographic Information System to produce Electronic Charts. She met Brian, her future husband, in the Office, they were married in 1983 and took early retirement together in 2016.
Helen was a devoted wife and mother, much loved by her husband and three children, Linda, Tania and Michael. The family lived a few miles east of Taunton and enjoyed beach holidays in Cornwall and the Mediterranean while the children were growing.
Helen enjoyed sailing off the coast of South Devon and touring by open top car and motorcycle in the UK and abroad. She was a kind and caring person who made a positive impression on everyone who encountered her socially or professionally.
Helen was diagnosed with stage four cancer in February 2020 and despite the best efforts of her doctors, it took her life in December.
