In loving memory of Ian Arthur Southgate who sadly passed away on 12th December 2020, aged 65 years.

Celebrating the life of a big hearted bear of a man.

Ian was born and raised in Leigh-on-Sea where he spent his life. His 'bear like hugs' defined him as well as his humour and cheeky personality.

“ His loving and lively soul filled our home, he was very happy to be back living down Burnham Road, the road he was born. Nothing will fill the space he has left behind, but I know I’ll see him in my dreams, my sweetheart.”

"Our dad had a special quality- a way of making people feel cared for and loved in a powerful way. We are immensely lucky and grateful to have him as a dad."

"If there is one phrase that's been used most often to describe Ian over the past day, it is that he was 'larger than life'. He truly was a big man with a very big heart who who will be sorely missed by us all." -Leigh Rams

"He epitomised the team spirit and competitiveness in sport."

"So many people that know him, and know he was a golfer, perhaps don't realise that in his pomp he was not just a good player but a lovely lovely player. What a prodigious striker of the ball. Let's not forget, in the early 70s there was no titanium/graphite/carbon golf technology : woods were wooden and the best golf balls available here were Slazenger Plus and Dunlop 65. But he moved the ball 275 yards."

"He just squeezed every last drop of water out of the flannel. Others today have called him larger than life. And legend. And I want to add to those, "bon viveur". He was all of those."

"Ian did so much for so many people and had great affiliations with so many places... Southend GC, Southend RFC and Leigh Ramblers, the Freemasons and of course his many clients and work colleagues. He was as big an influence at all these places as he was at Thorpe Hall GC getting involved in everything to make people's experience more enjoyable, raising money for good causes and improvements along the way. In terms of work going that extra mile for all his clients to secure their financial wellbeing in the future. For most people this would have been overwhelming. For Ian it was just what you do in life."

It is important for us to note that due to Covid restrictions, the funeral, being held on his birthday, is strictly by invitation only.
Being limited to such a small number has been particularly hard and we are deeply sorry not to throw the doors open to you all.
You are very welcome to watch the service online.

One day in the future, a momentous gathering will be organised to ensure a "wake" is done the right way, with everyone together.

We would like to thank you all for your kind messages and words of support at this sad time. Please continue to share any anecdotes from your time with Ian / our Dad, it's been a pleasure to hear your stories and memories about him.

Donations, in Ian's memory, are being gratefully accepted for two small, local children charities: Gold Geese and Packed With Smiles. Both close to Ian, in their own ways.

If you are able, please book in to donate blood, in honour of Ian's relationship with 'Jack's Journeymen'.
Thank you.

Desperately shocked and upset to hear of your early passing. It’s taken this long to sink in. Having known you and been mates since 1974, will miss you for sure!! Rest in peace my dear friend and take care until we hopefully meet once more in heaven. Much love, Greg x

Dear Southgate family,
Ian was my friend and Masonic brother. He was one of the few men I have ever known who was so well loved and respected by everybody who met him. I remember his warmth and generosity of spirit and will never forget the tine when he had the whole lodge virtually in tears when he told us of his granddaughter’s illness and his joy when she began to improve. This kind and gentle giant touched many of us deeply with his warm and giving nature and his obvious zest for life and laughs. He will never be forgotten in Belgrave lodge and we will certainly be raising a glass (or three) to his memory at our next lodge meeting. Our deepest condolences to you all. Rest in Peace Worshipful Brother Ian.

Dear Ian and family,
I was honoured to have known Ian through the Belgrave Lodge. Although we met on only a few occasions, I can honestly say that he was one of the most genuine and big hearted men that I have ever met.
While I wish that I could have known him better, I will carry forward the sentiment which existed in his generosity of spirit.
Today, I watched his farewell service which was enormously moving.
With deepest sympathy,
Richard Brewin

Matthew Cooper donated £20 in memory of Ian

I fondly remember a stroll around Sunningdale with lots of stories and then a sudden question. "What do you make of that bunker, Mr Cooper?" Ian asked. "The conditioning's not very fair," I said. "Correct," he said, adding: "Of course, life's not very fair. But if we can do something about making it fairer, we should."
