David Jackson donated in memory of Roger

“ No one who has not seen Venice in April knows the full, indescribable charm of that magical city. The gentleness and softness of spring are to Venice what the bright sun of summer is to majestic Genoa, what the gold and purple of autumn are to that grand old man among cities, Rome....
“Venice is dying, Venice is deserted” - so her inhabitants will tell you; but it may be that in the past she lacked such charm as this, the charm of a city fading in the very culmination and flowering of its beauty. No one who has not seen her, knows her: neither Canaletto or Gaudi was able to record the silvery delicacy of her air, her vistas, so near and yet so fugitive, her marvellous harmony of graceful lines and melting colours. To the visitor, soured and broken by life, Venice has nothing to offer; to him she will be bitter as the recollection of early unrealised dreams are bitter. But for him who still has strength and confidence within him, she will be sweet; let him bring his happiness to her and expose it to her enchanted skies, and, however radiant his happiness may be, she will enrich it with her own unfading light.”
Turgenev, 1859

Roger... a wonderful man, a terrific neighbour, an ideal cinema-going companion, and a purveyor of excellent profiteroles! We both feel very blessed to have known Roger since moving to Burton Stone Lane in 2013 and just wish we could have spent many more years enjoying his great company and friendship.

Jonathan and Emma Leaman-Brown donated in memory of Roger

Donated in memory of a friend and neighbour with whom we shared laughter, stories, food, drinks, joy and sadness.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits and
Are melted into air, into thin air:
And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.

William Shakespeare
From The Tempest

We did not know Roger for very long, but in the short time we had the pleasure, he was always so pleased to stop and say hello, always seemed to be smiling. It is so hard to lose a much loved husband and father. Our thoughts are with all of you and we will be holding you all in the light.
Cathy, Dan and Lou.
