Joe was a loving husband to his wife Jean, and greatly loved by his sisters, brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews. Also a special friend to many others. Passed away suddenly and too soon at the age of 81. Joe spent most of his early life in Chelmsford, Essex. An ex-Para who was never prouder of having served in 2 Para - “the best”. After leaving the services, he moved to Southend on Sea, worked mainly in the building trade and was a scaffolder for many years, only stopping when he reached 60 and his back was giving out. However he carried on within the trade until retiring at the age of 70. He had many interests. Gardening was his true love and he also had an allotment where he would spend many hours working and drinking tea with his allotment friends. Joe also loved wildlife, all forms of history; local, military and aviation, visiting many air shows over the years. He and Jean also loved travelling and visited many wonderful places in Europe and North America.
There is a big space where Joe should be. He will be missed beyond words.

IMPORTANT CHANGE: The funeral will be held on Thursday 28th January 2021 at Southend Crematorium, unfortunately by invitation only due to Covid restrictions.

Dear Joe,
All of those lovely days and holidays we spent together. Barbecues in the rain with wet weather gear and brollies, looking after Samantha and Henry and guarding them from Daddy Longlegs! Toby cocking his leg up our kitchen table and finally, who is going to bring me my fried egg sandwich at work?
If only one last big hug.
All our love, Jim & Jane xxxx

Joe will always be in our hearts. He was a proper Gentleman.
We remember the first time we met Joe, Jean brought him to meet us for Sunday Lunch. He was in for a fast ride!

A whirlwind introduction to us, and then meeting up with Ken's family and friends in the White Lion for their traditional 2 hour Sunday Session, which involved drinking copious amounts of beer, followed by more alcohol over lunch.

Immediately Ken met Joe they knew they were kindred spirits and over many years have shared good times together, exchanging stories, visiting pubs, and drink beer, as can be seen in the photographs we have of Joe, over many many happy years in his company.

He was more than a brother in law to us, There will be a big space in our lives now, but he will always have our memories, He will be sorely missed by us and many others.

Rest In Peace Joe.
A man with a big smile and an even bigger heart. I am very proud to say he was my brother in law and my friend. I have many memories of Joe but this one stands out and is one I would like to share. Many years ago, Jean arranged, as a Christmas present, for Joe to go to West Ham and meet in the 66 Club Hospitality Suite; Geoff Hurst. As some may know Joe went to school and played football with Geoff.
Joe and me duly turned up on match day, very excited. Unfortunately, on this occasion Geoff was unable to attend and Martin Peters stood in his sted. We still had a great day but Joe didnt get the reunion he wanted. The next day I wrote to Geoff explaining how Joe was looking forward to seeing his old friend again after so many years. A couple of days later I had a phone call, it was Geoff Hurst, he would love to meet with Joe and for us to come again to the 66 Club for the next home game. Unbelievable!
We duly went to the game and Joe and Geoff were reunited. But almost best of all, Judith, Geoff's wife was there too, again old school friends, and they spent the entire time reminiscing, with Geoff popping back n forth when he could as he had to carry out his duty to the other guests.
It was special for me to see Joe remembering old times with his World Cup winning hero mate and with Judith swapping those childhood memories.
We often recalled that day and for me it is one that I will never forget.
Sleep well 'little ol boy' x
