In loving memory of Mary Elizabeth Higgs who sadly died on the 19th November 2020.
Des and Tricia want to take a few moments to tell you about their amazing and special mum, Mary.
Mum was born in Doons, Cookstown, Co. Tyrone. The eldest child in a family of nine children with four sisters and four brothers. Times were hard but mum always reflected on her childhood with fondness, love and a sense of pride on how they cared for each other.
Mum left school at 14 years of age to take up her first job helping out at a local hotel. Mum always had a strong work ethos and worked hard throughout her life to make sure the people she loved were taken care of. Always willing to help others and frequently putting their needs before her own, but that’s who she was.
Mum experienced some tough times in her life, widowed at a very young age with two small children and then again in older life, as well as facing cancer three times. But mum was strong, positive and extremely resilient, always stoical about life, appreciative of what she had and prepared to get through whatever came her way with smile on her face. Not one to complain and always hiding her pain to protect others with her usual response to anyone who asked, “I’m fine, thank you”.
Mum was immensely proud of her 2 children, 7 grandchildren and three great grandchildren and loved nothing better than spending time with us all. We all treasure the special memories of family occasions, especially the holidays abroad, where up to 18 of us would spend time together enjoying life and having fun. Mum simply enjoyed sitting back, taking it all in and being the queen of our family.
Mum was an extremely kind, caring and loving person who lived her life with a strong set of values that never wavered. Always there to support and guide us, she was our rock who we loved and adored. We will miss her so much but will always be grateful that we were blessed to call her our mum.
We will miss you so much mum xxxx
