In loving memory of John Burgess who sadly passed away on 22nd November 2020

John was born in Battersea, London on May 31st 1935, to Anne and Edward Burgess.
He was the third of five children. Edward (Ted) and Mary were older than John and sisters Sheila and Joan were younger.
John's family remained in London throughout the Second World War and he suffered disruption to his schooling due to the war, however, that doesn't explain the amount of schooling he missed once the war was over.

John served in the Army for his National Service, spending a period in Libya.

John's career included a stint as a welder before he became a scaffolder and then later, despite his lack of formal education, a London Black Cab driver, for which he had to memorize 320 routes and 25,000 streets.

John married Hazel Ash in August 1958 and had been married over 62 years at the time of his death.
John is survived by Hazel, his son John, daughter Kay and grandchildren Michael and William (John & Melanie) and Charlie and Hollie (Kay & Alan).

John sadly died of Pnemonia Covid whilst in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich.
He is greatly missed by his family and friends.

I lived next door to John and Hazel for many years and I struck gold because I could not have asked for better neighbours. We had some great laughs and they were special people. John was so kind and would do anything to help. I remember him being a great support to me after my husband died and I will always be grateful to both John and Hazel for getting me through an awful time. I will always remember his wicked sense of humour with a smile. With our love and sincere condolences. Paula, Ivo, Jo, Aaron, Lewis & Ava xxx

Remembering John with great fondness. Have wonderful childhood memories of Hazel and John being great friends with my mum and dad, attending their Christmas night parties, going to numerous events at the Aquarius Gold Club and even sleeping in their bath at Gatton Manor one year. John always had a lovely smile for everybody and will be greatly missed. Love and condolences to Hazel and the whole family at this sad time xxx

So many memories what one can I chose for John whom I respected , loved , grew up with , always welcomed and made me so comfortable as part of the family. My memory has to be the Christmas parties at Hazel and Johns with a pint in his hand singing along to “when your old wedding ring was new” that still brings back special memories for me today . You will be deeply missed John but never forgotten x Be at peace love Vicki , Kenny & Harry xxx
