Roy, or Jack as I will always remember him, was a wonderful person. He was the most kind, considerate and tolerant man I ever worked with. I never saw him angry or even upset. Years of riding the waves in the Royal Navy had made him into an easy-going person who got on with everybody and treated everybody the same. Nothing ever fazed him - he took it all in his stride. I used to marvel at his Navy stories, told in the mess, always seated with his legs crossed at the thigh and a rollie on the go, with a glint in his eye that can only have been pride in his past service. If I had met Jack before we were firemen together, perhaps if I'd strayed into the Royal Oak one night and played darts, I doubt I'd have been a fireman, I'd have joined the Navy! Roy was a real gentleman, one of the very best. I am proud to have known him and privileged to have served in the Fire Service with him. I will always remember him. Rest in Peace, Jack. Love from Ken and Mel

God Bless Roy and his family. Roy was such a lovely man. Caring and generous. Often gave me a rollup when I was out of baccy. Had many a laugh and a chat. I miss those days at Colchester Rd. Will never forget you Roy.

Sally Hammond donated £50 in memory of Roy

My first experience with Roy was when he welcomed me into the fire service, he was always a happy and jolly presence at Colchester Road.
Little did I know that I would end up living next door to this lovely man along with Viv. Our enduring memory will always be Roy in the garden he loved, preparing a rollie whilst we chatted about the service or gardening - he was always a great source of knowledge.
Bless you Roy, you'll be missed. x
