In loving memory of Hazel Puckey who sadly passed away on 27th September 2020
Born November 1931. Richmond upon Thames. She always liked to say "I was born on the green- well not actually on the green, in a house on the green!"
Her family moved to Hanworth, near Feltham in Middlesex and she had memories of war time air raids and often having to spend the night in a shelter
1940's Left school at an early age and got a job in the city of London as a typist/secretary. She enjoyed the daily commute from Feltham and had fond memories of her working life in the city where she had lots of fun times
1951- Married the love of her life, John - who she had met at a local youth club. There had been a number of other suitors but John was the one for her.
Took lodgings in Hanworth in the early stage of their marriage. John worked for a furniture shop / removals firm in Feltham
In 1952 Roger was born and Hazel became full time mother/housewife
1954 - moved into their first house in Uxbridge Road Feltham. To help pay the mortgage they took in various lodgers and John started to keep chickens. This didn't last long however as Hazel found that Roger had caught fleas from them and one day John arrived home from work to find they had all gone!!
1955 Second son Graham born
Early 1960's Hazel and John started up their own business, a greengrocers in Ashford Common Middx. Hazel juggled working in the shop and bringing up the boys - the family living in the flat above.
Mid 1960's they changed direction, buying a shop/flat next to the greengrocers to start up a fish and chip shop, which became a highly successful business with long queues often forming. Hazel was now working long hard hours as well as doing all the book keeping - all done manually in those days. The pattern of combining hard graft in the business with bringing up two boys was now well and truly established. Somehow she struck a balance.
Late 1960's whilst still running the chip shop the family moved to Laleham. The boys by now were in secondary school and the business was going from strength to strength
Mid 1970's - The hard graft had begun to take it's toll and they decided to have a complete break from running their own business. They leased out the shop and John did part time deliveries for Curry's in Staines whilst Hazel worked part time in Dolcis shoes also in Staines.
Early 1980's Roger's daughter, and Hazel's first grandchild Jennifer was born, the start of a very special relationship. Moved from Laleham to her beloved Bungalow, Windles, in South Ascot. The property was subject to a large scale renovation which John worked on with the help of Paul, one of the neighbours. Hazel hated the disruption but gritted her teeth and loved the end result. She started to build a bond with all the surrounding neighbours. A bond which has lasted to this day.
Late 80's and into the 90's Grandson Richard had arrived, further delight for Hazel. Now they went back into the fish and Chips business this time in North Ascot. The Ascot fish bar was another success but hard work again. Graham now joined the business which he was to take over when Hazel and John started their well earned retirement
2002 Hazel lost her beloved John. She carved out a new life, determined to build on her circle of friends and neighbours. A keen organiser, Flower arranging, Scrabble nights, Art Classes, Gardening club, Ascot Ladies, Women's Guild, Cruises to name but a few!!
With the incredible help of family (Jennifer became her main carer), fantastic friends and neighbours, she was able, despite failing health, to remain at Windles until 2019 when she moved to Pembroke House care home in Camberley.
Despite a number of health issues, some very serious, she never complained and in typical fashion was an extremely popular resident at the care home, thriving on the organised activities and new friendships made.
