In loving memory of John Frederick Pike who sadly passed away on 1st September 2020
John Frederick Pike was born in Bermondsey in 1925, one of eleven children. He had five brothers and five sisters.
He joined the RAF as a volunteer in 1942 and saw active service flying in Wellington’s and Lancaster’s reaching the rank of Warrant Officer Class 1.
After the war his first job was as a Shop Manager in the Old Kent Road. He went on to work for Pearl Assurance during the day and at Catford Dogs in the evening on the Tote. He also worked for Hackney Council as the Chief Cashier, a job he stayed in till he retired in 1990.
He remained in Bermondsey and later met and married Kathleen in 1953. They had three children: Ann, John & Mark. John had 5 grandchildren (Kathleen, Michelle, Benjamin, Devora and Elias) and 7 great grandchildren (Jack, twins Tommy & Teddy, Leon, Una, Jason and Moana Mae).
John was a very active person in Bermondsey supporting the Catholic Church in Jamaica Road as well as assisting in the running of the associated Felton Catholic Social Club. His grandfather started a loan club to help the local community to remain outside of the clutches of the local loan sharks, a role John continued well after his retirement. He was also Treasurer to the Fisher Football Club going home and away to matches.
To celebrate his retirement John went on a world tour for several months. He continued to travel the world with his family and friends including Disneyland where he rode the rollercoaster at the age of 80 nearly losing his teeth in the process.
He always enjoyed his sports like cricket and football and took up bowls in his retirement. He had a season ticket with Charlton Athletic although his love was with the Arsenal who he followed throughout his life.
John left a lasting impression on everyone he met and remained a true gentleman till the end.
