  • Sorry for putting this post up twice. I thought that my first effort had failed when after several hours it was still not there.

I was fortunate enough to work with Des for a number of years and fished with him on many occasions during that period and after. Somehow I had forgotten his "chuckle " until it was mentioned here. An excellent "dry" sense of humour is how I would put it.

We are remembering my brother in law Des Hall who has sadly passed away. He was a brother in law in a million. Even the Irish Sea divided us we never felt far apart from him and my sister Ber. No longer will we see him on his favorite sofa when we come to visit. A thorough gentleman, loved and liked by all. Farewell our friend say hello to Tara for us.

We’ll remember Des as a proper family man, a quiet, gentle, calm, safe presence, happy with the good simple things in life and no interest in the frills. The kind of role model you can have as a child and not really notice or appreciate properly until you look back - the kind of man we’d be proud to see our sons become. We really loved Des as we know so many others did - he’ll be very much missed. We just hope for a world where we can be more like Des. God bless him always.

Des was my older cousin and I remember that a visit to the family home in Romford always resulted in me taking home a gift from Des even if it was just a small toy car. He also passed down to me a 10 gear racing bike and a HUGE Meccano set with motors and everything!! He was very generous and tolerant of his little cousin.
He would often take me fishing and I remember a trip out in his little green sports car.
As others have said, he was a very gentle man with a dry sense of humour and retirement in his forties suited him extremely well.
He will be greatly missed and I feel privileged to have known him.

Dear Des was the sweetest, most gentle man. He had every car tool going and helped me when I most needed it and I will ever be grateful. He liked my curries and, in particular, my curry puffs. He always had a twinkle in his eye and the loveliest smile. I’ll miss you my friend. Rest in Peace x

Des was a good man! When everyone in the world seemed to be looking for “ bigger and better” Des stood out from the crowd as a “contented man”.
He loved his family and enjoyed the simple pleasures of life - his micro thin roll ups and a pint!
His favourite watering hole was St Edwards Catholic Club and it’s closure was a great loss to him coming as it did at the onset of his illness.

Des always avoided the limelight and hated any form of “Fuss”.He didn't like what he would call fancy food and I recall him visiting for lunch and him looking with horror at the food I had painstakingly prepared......he ended up with a plate of homemade sausage rolls and was a happy man!
I cannot remember Des ever saying anything mean/ unkind about anyone and was always able to find the goodness in others...a gift to be cherished and a great legacy to leave behind.

My abiding memory of Des will be his good manners.Even in the last months of his illness he was always gracious and thankful. I loved the way he always stood aside To let me pass ...with a wave of his hand “manners make the the man”
Thank you Des
X

Our dear sweet Des, how you made me laugh over the years , you are the very essence of a friend, you just listened, you had that art not many people have it,
Your coolness infuriated Danny he aspired to be as laidback,
Thanks for all the fags when I was trying to give up smoking, and the tissues you always had a spare in your pocket (kitchen Roll)
You will be sadly missed my dear friend
The last true gentlemen xxxx Geraldine and family xxxxxx

A wonderful, dear, softly spoken man who although separated by the Irish Sea was a huge part of my youth. Family holidays to Aunty Ber and Uncle Des were like trips across the world. A more laid back soul I have yet to meet. There was a beautiful warmth to him. Funny in an oh so understated way. Although our meetings were fleeting I will miss him terribly. He touched many many people. Here's to you Uncle Des I will miss you. Look after Moss for me. Rory, Callum and Kayla.

Des was a pal for almost 40 years. He was a founding member of the”A” team who would meet twice a week to talk about anything and everything over a beer.Sadly the membership is diminishing over the years but I can recall the laughter or in Des’s case chuckle. In the game of cards he would enjoy the greatest pleasure in holding on to a vital card to ensure we all “knocked”in a game of sevens.
I have never known someone as “set in his ways” as Des.From his crispy bacon to his charcoaled steak. He never got a cold or sniffles but “Man Flu”.Many of us still recall the time he arrived at the Club with a kitchen roll tied with string round his neck.He also loved a bargain;hence he had the biggest collection of tools and equipment often in duplicate or triplicate simply because they were bargains.
So I will say goodbye to a friend. It was a pleasure and priviledge.
John

I’ve known you my entire life Des, almost 50 years and I only found out today you’ve got a different name! Ronald? It made me realise how much of you I don’t know....everybody celebrating your life here would have different memories of you, different times shared in the history of your life....., for me, you entered as one of my dads best friends from School, a “pop in” and constant at baptisms, communions & confirmations. Your gentle demeanour, understated humour and ready resigned chortle will remain etched in my memory of you, lovely gentle man. God speed and I hope my dad and your people are there to greet you with a roll up and a pint.
