In loving memory of Bert Ross who sadly passed away on 3rd August 2020.
Bert was born within 586 Springburn Road Glasgow on 1st Nov 1948 weighing in at 9 1/4 lbs. He would be one of four children born to his loving parents Robert and Margaret.
Bert's sister, Iris, was born on the 8th December 1949 but sadly, she passed on the 25th July 1950 when she was 7 months old.
The family moved to Plantation where Bert's sister Norah was born, and then Beith Street, in Partick where his sister Pam was born.
They moved again from Beith Street to Birgidale Avenue in Castlemilk.
He began his education at Hayfield Primary School, where he did well at Arithmetic, Maths and English and enjoyed reading, particularly stories and poems of Robert Burns.
His efforts were rewarded when he achieved the Dux award.
He loved playing football and played for several different teams, even playing for a team managed by his father Robert.
He was also a keen Cub and then Boy Scout and looked forward to attending their Gatherings at Auchengillen.
After leaving school Bert started an apprenticeship in carpentry at Glasgow University Workshops where he achieved a first-class City & Guilds qualification.
During his apprenticeship at Glasgow University he met and worked with John Murphy who was his future wife Jean's cousin and that is how they met each other, through a family connection in 1966.
Bert loved football and as we all know his favourite football team was Glasgow Rangers, a team he supported as man & boy.
He went with his dad to Wembley in 1967 to see Scotland v England, when they saw their team, with heroes like John Greig, Jim Baxter and Dennis Law, beat the current World Champions 3-2 and win the Championship.
Bert and Jean were married on the 31st October 1970 in St Davids Ramshorn church in Glasgow.
They bought their first house together in Linthouse in Glasgow where in 1971 their first son Robert was born followed in 1974 by their second son Scott.
The family moved from Linthouse to a new housing estate in Moodiesburn where the family was complete when in 1977 their third son Craig was born.
After setting up a company and working with John for several years, Bert joined STV where he became chargehand foreman in the scenic department. During his time at STV he worked on Glen Michael's Cavalcade, Take the High Road, Taggart and several other well know TV shows of the time.
After 10 years working at STV, Bert went self-employed working for BBC TV and Films, STV and several different film companies and up until retirement he was working on Outlander.
Bert was a doting grandad and was overjoyed when his granddaughter Alison came along in 1998, really enjoying when she came to visit or stay over. Then as the years went by more grandchildren came along, Steven, Josi, Jaimi & Juliet. He loved having them round for family get-togethers or at the holidays.
Bert worked hard to give his family a stable life and was so proud of his sons and grandchildren. He had a lovely nature with a cheeky charm, didn’t suffer fools gladly and was a truly great family man.
Unfortunately, Bert was diagnosed with cancer and passed due to complications after surgery. He fought the good fight until the end.
He was a strong, determined and loving man who will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
