I was greatly saddened finding this obituary to Barry, he and I spent virtually 11 years together as engineering apprentices at Derby Loco Works and later working in the same department at the Railway research.
We both entered the works training school is April 1962, aged 15 straight from school, I have a group photograph showing us standing amongst about 30 others wearing our new green overalls.
After passing some critical exams at night school we were both promoted to Engineering apprentices and then followed a training path which meant spending time in each shop and later on all offices, gaining a general understanding of all skills & disciplines.
As we progressed we were eventually put on block release where we spent 6 months in the works and 6 months at college, studying first for a ONC and then HND in mechanical engineering.
We both achieved our HND in 1969, then continued on for another year to sit the CEI exam which would enable us to eventually apply for corporate membership of the Mechanical Engineers once we had reached the required practical experience etc in engineeering
In 1971 we had completed all our training and the time had come to apply for a position in the company and by some odd coincidence we both ended up working for the same boss in the same office on the Advanced passenger Train project at Derby.
Our paths finally parted in 1973 when we both managed to gain promotion to different sections on the railway, I joined BREL, and unfortunately from there on,I lost touch with Barry.
I'm not surprised to read how he finally became a director of a company and was well respected by his work colleagues, he was such a genuine person and he did have natural leadership skills.
I was also so pleased to see he finally met someone, settled down and had a family, including grand children, when I last knew him, he was living on his own in a flat on Kedleston road and would tell horror stories of how the place was infested with mice and rats.
It really saddens me to think he is no longer with us and the possibility of ever bumping into him somewhere and chatting about our times together has gone, bless his soul.
Please accept my deepest sympathies.
