My dad Alan Smith courageously and without complaint fought through 5 years of treatment but went to sleep, peacefully at home on Wednesday 24th June. He was 72 but will live forever in our hearts.

The close family and friends who came from near and far to celebrate his life made the final day of farewell very special. The touching tributes from his grandsons Connor, Alex & Blake, my brother Ben and his lifelong friend Trevor made me extremely proud of these fine boys and men.

We know that his sisters and our cousins in Florida, Oregon and Maryland USA were thinking of him on the day and beyond.

We remain proud of our Mum Janet for the graceful and brave way she has accepted the big gap that has been left in all our lives.

He was a great man who did a lot of things for a lot of people for a long time. He had loyal friends and family who were always ready to return the help when he needed it and he will continue to be loved as life continues here with good thoughts and memories.

Our dad motivated and helped us to find health, discipline and to live an honourable, truthful life.

The biggest truth I can ever express is how much I loved my dad. I miss him very much and always will, until we meet again.

My dad was a kind, caring and generous man, who taught me so much. I miss him, and think about him often. If there is anything beyond our mortal existence, then I look forward to meeting him again some day. RIP dad x
